So my 4Mbps line is running really slowly. After chatting with the support guy from Afrihost, we see that the exchange I am connecting to in Linden, Randburg is 3 km's away. There is one in Conrad drive which is +- 1.6 km away, so much closer.

Will Telkom be willing to move my line to another exchange? Does anyone have experience with this?

Thanks

Protip, the exchange locations can be found at www.broadbandstats.co.za

Very unlikely, but PM the Telkom rep here, he'll be able to sort you out

I wouldn't get my hopes up if I were you.

Afrihost is just being silly. These things almost never happen, and they're giving you false hope.

There are some people on here that have successfully had their lines moved to other exchanges.
PM TelkomZA he might be able to help.

It must be said for the support guy, he did warn me that it might be difficult/impossible to do, but that is basically all I can do. 3km is a long way and SNR and attenuation is killing me. That is basic physics and no amount of PR from Telkom or Afrihost can change that.

I will PM him now, hopefully I can be one of the lucky ones.

Out of curiosity: would there be any cost involved in transferring from one exchange to the other?

I would think I might have to pay installation cost or something similar. I am waiting for the reply from TelkomZA and depending on whether it can be done I will find out about the costs.

Unless they have installed a MSAN near you, your chances are extremely slim. You are asking for what was known as a "foreign feed". This is a request to reroute or install a cable from the customer away from the normal route (DP1-SDC1-MDF-Exchange1) to a different exchange, eg. DP1-SDC2-MDF-Exchange2.

it will require a new cable to be installed between SDC1 and SDC2 in order to route you to Exchange2.

Not cheap and they will ask you to carry the cost.

Pffft 3km is nothing, Im sitting at 4.5km and all I can get stable is a 3mb line :(
When I move in a few months though I will be able to get 20mb so that should be a nice change.

You know how telkom operates ,don't be surprised if they tell you they already linked you up to the closest exchange as it's their standard procedure when connecting clients

Not true. It all depends on the cable layout in the suburb.

The exchanges feed a geographical area and do not over lap unless there are multiple exchanges in one building .
They can not change you to a closer exchange , the only way is as MickeyD said and that is foreign feed .
I would like to know if any one has ever been moved to a different exchange with out moving premises .
Not going to happen AFAIK .

Yep, with the MSAN/ISAM rollout your routing could change slightly.

Yeah, will try them again as well and see if I'll be lucky this time, got a site stuck at 2Megs :(

I logged a few tickets with Telkom. First they just kept on resetting the port and closing them.

Then last week techs start calling me. They said there are many people in the area experiencing the same issues ie. Packet loss, slow speeds etc.

So they said they are upgrading the DSLAM, that was Sunday and Youtube and everything was perfect since Saturday. i was actually wondering why they work on Sunday.

Then afterwards yesterday this lady Kashiefa from Telkom phones and says yo you have been moved over to a new exchange. I was like pls don't mean this makes my internetz slow again. But luckily not it was still 1.36Mb on a 2Mb line during the day. YouTube was not buffering and browsing was fast. I am still surprised they fixed it. But I took the advise from ppl here. Just keep on logging faults even if they close them. If they ever phone you, explain the situation and said they keep closing tickets but nothing changes. Perhaps if enough people complain they will do something. It worked for me. :D

If your telephone did not change then they did not move you to another exchange, but to another DSLAM in the exchange.

If you are ever moved to another exchange your telephone number has to change.
