Hey all,

I am moving to a new house in 2 months. What do I need to do with my adsl to get it moved? Do I need to contact telkom to cancel it at my current place and then only once im into the new place will I then request a new adsl line there?

How long in advance do I need to contact them to cancel the current adsl?

I presume ill do the same with my isp. (Axxess)

I am just renting if that makes any difference?

Thanks!

I'm moving within the same area, but to a new house. Can I just transfer the line and ADSL?

Best is to chat to Telkom about moving your ADSL line. They will need to check if there is space available in the exchange. They will also be able to tell you what you need to do to transfer the line, I think they can do this without you having to cancel one and then only when you move into your new place, request the new one.

For your ISP it should just be a change of address, thats about it, but you may want to also confirm with them.

Not sure how much help this was :)

From my past experience moving house ive always had to go through the same process : 1) Phone Telkom 2-3 weeks before moving and order 'n new line for the new house. This will cater for them taking their sweet time. Chances are pretty good ur still gonna wait 'n week or so after you move in as they never come on the day you make the appointment with them. The lovely thing about this is that even if your new house has a line already you still need to 'order' one. 2) 2-3 days before leaving the old house phone telkom and cancel your current line. Hopefully you're starting a new month in the new place so this should fit nicely as they keep the line active till the end of the current month. 3) Go and make sure abour your ISP's cancellation policy as soon as you can. Ive asked them numerous times if i could 'freeze' my account for, say, a month till i get the new line and everything is sorted, yet it apparently doesnt work that way. One has to cancel your current subscription and reapply when you have your new number, usually resulting in a whole new set of logins.

This is the process i had to follow each time, though it might be different for you! Just give them a ring and ask about it, but dont wait for a few days before.
Hope it helps

Ok, thanks for the replies. I have a feeling this is going to be a painful mission (as things usually are with Telkom). Hopefully ill be pleasantly surprised...

This is something I am dreading to do once we move into a bigger flat. Just that I've had such bad experiences with Telkom (last adsl related wait was 3 months) and that's a long time to go without internet :P. Hopefully the new place will have a phone line already installed or something, but argh that wouldn't really help would it? Pretty clueless about it, but I'm really not looking forward to the move..

Another big thing to watch out for (yet im not totally sure how correct my information is) in new complexes is the whole SmartVillage thing where you're forced to join their little 'community connection scheme' at ridiculous rates. Id check what my DSL options are at the new premises before signing anything if its something you would be worried about.

Just hope they actually do know what they are talking about too when asking if there is availability at the new place. I moved in September, I've had to resort to Iburst for connectivity cause there are no ports.

I just had to do the same thing, I was only moving two streets away but it turned out the new address was on a different exchange.
So in that case you need to order a new line and then cancel your old one just before you move.

It took 2 months in total for them to allocate the line and come do the installation, so order ASAP!
