Hi Guys,

We're moving house in a few months to another unit in our complex - Currently on Web Africa Fibre from Vumatel - Since it's the same complex can I simply take my router to the new place and it should pick it up immediately? As I understand it your router has all the required info on it already so strictly speaking I can just pop it in and be on my merry way right?

Anything I'm missing? Not sure how they would be able to distinguish between the units in the same complex because as far as I'm concerned it all falls under the same "address" in a way.

Thanks for the help.

No, it doesn't work like that. You will need to re-apply for the new unit. Each ONT and point installed in each unit has a unique number and will need to be activated.

Who is the fiber provider?

Thanks, didnt know that. The provider is Vumatel - Should I contact them directly or go through WebAfrica instead?

The ONT/CPE (optical network terminal/customer premises equipment) should still be at the new apartment/townhouse.

If you lucky, the cpe network number will be stuck on the device. I’d say pre-check/verify that the device will be left with existing tenants as they often take it with albeit they not allowed to (it belongs to Fibre provider) and ask them to check what the network address is.. else you will need the erf number.

Wrt can you just take your router plug it and Bob’s your uncle.. depends on your Fibre provider. Since it’s a new end point and the contract is usually with the Fibre endpoint cost baked in (you get one bill from isp not one for Fibre and one for isp like old school adsl), you will need to update username and password.. or, ask isp to keep username for new connection and then set password the same.

You most likely will need to cancel your current connection and apply for the new connection in the new unit. Speak to your ISP
