I am moving from my suburb to another one, meaning I will be changing exchanges. I obviously need to move my ADSL line with me ;) . Does anybody know what will be the best/cheapest way of getting this done as painlessly as possible?

You do remember you have to deal with Telkom, don't you? How could the words "Painless", "Best", "Cheapest" be used in the same sentence as the word "Telkom"?

Step 1 : Have a meeting wif the person currently staying there ... if they're trusty, then:
Step 2 : Get their tel number - phone teklom and get them to do the check to see if the line can do ADSL. If yes - then:
Step 3 : Fill in a Line-Takeover form. I cannot remember what this is called exactly, but you just takeover the line, no connetion fee's and stuff, and you can set a takeover date. This form should be gotten from local telco office.
Step 4 : Once all stuff is signed [rent/purchase deal] - put a proper order in for your ADSL line using the "TakeOver" contract as the proof of ownership - and start praying that they get the timing right - try to get it as a "self install package". This should be done on phone.
Step 5 : Pray .. and remember to cancel your current stuff.

You will loose your TelkomInternet email's - back them up. They have never ever gotten that right [that i know of of course].

The reason they must be trusty is cos you keep their phone number, and you dont want peeps calling you at 2 in the morning asking for packages mkay.

I'm moving in a weeks time, this is what I have done so far (hoping it all works out):

Dial 10219 for transfers/discontinuances

They transfer your current services (or whichever you want to continue). Only cost so far is having to pay for adsl installation again. They don't do self-install where I'm moving to, but what can you do.

I requested this to happen a day before the move, just incase something doesn't go according to plan.

Hope it helps a bit.

Just do it well in advance ... I did it over 30 days before and still had to wait three weeks after that....

Hehe, So True

I still don't understand how they can not have self-install in some areas... Isn't it exactly the same process if one installs ADSL in Pofadder or Sandton?
