Hi All,

So the wife has a milestone birthday coming up and wants to go to Mozambique in May.

Will probably look at self driving from JHB to Ponta do Ouro for 5 nights or so, I've been looking at accommodation in the area but I've never been so any tips on some nice affordable resorts in a good location would be awesome.

Coco Rico's resort is great. They've got a swimming pool and decked restaurant. All the amenities, including the beach and famous Fernando's local pub is walking or crawling distance.

Take a flight to Maputo, rent a 4x4 and go further north from there. The Chinese has done some great road works. Do NOT drink the tap water, beer is cheaper than a bottle of water. Most of the meat on the road is goat, get used to the taste of goat. Surf & Turf are relatively cheap. Try not to break down along the way (If you don't pay the "helpers" They will just cause you more trouble, especially with tourists.) Cops will stop you, make sure you've got a few R100 bucks on you. Same as Swazi, you "Pay" the fine right there and then.

Be aware, if you stay over in Maputo, some of the roads in the city turns into one-way roads during peak hours. So be careful leaving in the morning or afternoon. Go visit the casino and the market in the city, at this market you can get anything, from toilet paper to jet fuel, we got 1kg cashew nuts at the market for R60 bucks.

It is well worth the trip. My biggest advice is to not use your own car but rather fly and rent. There are car radio licenses, blinkers etc must be strapped down on the car, rivited down, else they get stolen. (This is mostly Maputo).

We've done multiple trips, from work to leisure. From these multiple trips, again renting a vehicle is your best bet. Do not use you're own. Using a rental with local numberplates will get you more likely than not, left alone on the road and not harassed by cops and locals.
