Hi Guys,

I am planning a 4/5 day getaway to Mozambique, the problem is the people I want to go with is very cash strapped. We will be driving from Pretoria.

I have never been to that area, so I have no idea where and what to look out for. We do not mind camping out or staying at backpackers (unless it is very dangerous??), just as long as it is close to a nice beach. I would really like to do some snorkeling aswell.

Can any of you give some (cheap) suggestions?

Chrz.

There are lots of nice camp sites, how far up do you want to go?

Ponta do Ouro is just over the border and pretty good otherwise Guinjata Bay has a few or Beira or Vilanculos...

EDIT: Do you have a 4x4? if not most sites wont work...

Vilanculos is rather pricey though. Ponta do Oura is like being in South Africa. It really is. To be honest this time of year prices go up in Mozambique so you're not going to find all that many places to stay on a really tight budget. What is the budget btw?

For 4-5 days though I would recommend Ponta do Oura, its still good in the off season when its a bit quieter.

To get up to the nicer places you need more time as for instance Guinjata is about 14-16 hours drive from PTA so thats 2days gone.(Beira even more and Vilanculos is 2 days worth of driving one way )

I have no idea. Think student vibes. I would sponsor the petrol, they just need to pay for their food, drinks and accomodation....but if we camp, or stay at a backpackers, it cant be all that expensive? R50-R100 per night?

Would Kosi bay be better for a shorter trip like this, if I cannot go high up?

Probably not. My friend's dad does have a double cab bakkie, but I think we would prefer to drive with a sedan.

Oh hell no. You're not going anywhere cheapish in Mozambique without a 4X4. Kosi Bay it is...

Kosi Bay accessible without 4x4?

I was at Ponta over easter, very festive place and cheap, R150-00 camping fees, lovely snorkeling and swimming beach. Forget trying to get there without a 4x4.

Thanks DJ.

I am also considering Sodwana maby. Have you maby been to Kosi bay and Sodwana? How is the snorkeling at both? Do you need a boat or can you snorkel from the shore?

I was at Sodwana a while ago, one of the numbnuts in our group did the trek in his 350z.... so yes, its more than doable without a 4x4...

Hell we even saw some oke from Brakpan (i'm guessing) on the beach in his subaru...

You can snorkel from the shore, but the best snorkelling will be a fair bit out... we dived a 2mile reef and it was amazing.

Go with two wallets, one for your expenses and a semi empty one with cash for your bribes. And stay the fsck away from the R&R's if you ever wanna show your face in public again ;)
