Alright, maybe I just have to use TB for more than 2 days to experience the same problems/issues that others have alluded to, somewhere in another thread.

I have just started setting up my multiple accounts in TB (profiles in OLK2k), in keeping with my multiple personality disorder, and TB appears to be just what I've always wanted from OLK2k but received limitation & frustration unlimited instead.

For the moment, I have decided not to mix everything up in Local Folders. I have yet to experiment with Manage Identities, which appears to be multiple personality disorder within a specific account- if it is, I will be using that as well :) , and spitting on Outlook's grave while I do so!!!

The only irritating thing, so far, appears to be, the inability to switch between pop3 and imap servers- I had to start from scratch by creating a new account :(

Just so I know what I'm getting myself in for (using TB instead of OLK2k), what are the problems/issues that Thunderbird has flitted in you face?

Since TB 0.6

I've used Thunderbird since 0.6 without any 'bugginess'. I use 2 'accounts' or profiles and have got a lot of mail; probably about 200-300MB worth of emails (I only archive once a year :) ).

Just upgraded to 1.0 over the w/e. My only gripe is that it takes a long time to load (I think due to the large mail file size) and if it's been in the background for a while and I re-activate it, it can also take about 10 seconds to become 'active' again.

Very happy to be off Outlook...

It doesn't have tasks and calendar support (until Sunbird anyway) and besides as I own Outlook 2003 (which is much better than previous versions of Outlook) I have no reason to move over.

Our company was supposed to be purchasing M$Office2003 (upgrade licenses from Office2k Premium), however we have fewer than 10 people, most of them don't need half the features of M$Office.

I am considering suggesting a switch to open source (with a modest PayPal donation in return).

Yep it is an ideal mail client for small companies. If you're purchasing Office for only a few people you have to pay full price which can put a large dent in the budget of smaller companies. Large companies on the other hand get bulk licensing deals from MS and generally require the corporate support MS provides.

The thing you have to consider though is the rest of the Office package. Those who use Word and/or Excel extensively may not wish to switch over to alternatives.

Very Tru, but I think "the budget" has already been squandered on something else, so I should have a lot of enthusiastic ears listening to:
OpenOffice+ThunderBird+FireFox+PhaseOutM$Office2k

I don't know if Office2k03 is any better (than 2k) WRT hotfix installs (office.microsoft.com), but it really drives me up the wall with 2k, especially since most installs were originally off CD & I don't have space on my server for all the CD files it wants data1.cab + a bunch of others...

What I don't like about Thunderbird is the fact that I can't retrieve my Hotmail mail through it, like I can with Outlook - put me off, so I uninstalled it.

Hotmail = M$, hence not surprising... :( :(

TheYak, Hotmail lost me as a user years ago bcos I was forced to use OutlookExpress to download my Hotmail email- at the time Outlook did not support downloading from a Hotmail account.

I have only recently rejoined Hotmail as a result of being *FORCED* to do so by MSN Messenger which refused to allow me to register with a non-hotmail account, and I have friends & family that use MSNMsngrrrr...

I am not going to hold it against ThunderTweety if it doesn't support some proprietary M$ crud ;)

LOL! granted IC... I've had my hotmail account for the past five years, and I use it for everything... seen as I change ISPs as often as you would change a baby's nappy - yes, every time they (the ISPs) get full of ****.

So I'm hesitant to let go of it - I'll stick to Outlook2k3 for now.

I use TB at home and all in all it does what I want. I'm not a heavy mail user at home (In the office I receive about 150 mails every day, so I'm not keen to mail anyone when I'm enjoying my leisure time!).

One feature that I think was missed with Thunderbird is the real advantage of Firefox- TABS. I tend to have multiple messages open at any time, and having multiple windows open is just a pain in the @ss! Why not allow the option to browse messages in tabs?

Just my 2 cents.

Use TB at home too and outlook express at work.

Last time I used TB at work and imported my now huge store of outlook emails, it didn't handle it well at all. Huge slowdowns all round - that was version 0.8

For work, I'm thinking of just leaving outlook with my old mail intact - backing it up to CD - and switching to TB completely fresh - IOW, not importing any outlook email into it.

Thing is, I really like outlook express - it's fast and has all the features I want. Hmmm.

Agree!

I agree!!! It will improve a great deal with just this single feature...

Hi TheYak, I was extremely attached to my hotmail accounts (yes, I had several of them- used for different technical mailing lists, subscriptions...), but I have had the same @usa.net account since 1997, which I have always used instead of ISP specific email accounts, family & friends always use that email address as it never changes.

Getting back to MSNMsngrrrr, when you signup, it says you can use a non-hotmail account, as long as you have created a .Net Passport for your non-hotmail account, BUT it is a blatent lie (it might have worked a while ago, but not when I tried every single combination in October).

A new MSNMsngrrrr a/c will not work with a .NET Passport when the associated email address is not *@hotmail.* or *@msn.*, you can tell that I am still  about the whole thing...$*!@*&^# M$!!!

ThunderTweety circles over Redmond, fertilizing M$'s office building windows...

LOL! yes, i can tell that you're still a bit grumpy about it, but I'm sure I've seen people with hotmail usernames that aren't @hotmail or @msn...

*ponder*

arf9999, you have a winner there, if there's one thing I really hate is loads of open email windows cluttering up my windoze... It is strange that it wasn't included with TB1.0.

I had the same problem yesterday when I imported one of my OLK2K profile's mail items into TB1.0's Local Folders, it seems to have a problem with a large number of items.

PS: OLK2k I don't mind, but I have always passionately HATED OutlookExpress & what makes it worse is that when you try uninstalling OE6 with extreme prejudice, it simply reapears again after a dllcache refresh, eventually I tried setting the ntfs permissions to deny everyone, even that didn't work after a restart, eventually I gave up. $*!@*&^# M$!!!

You mean MSNMsngrrrr usernames, yes? I know, one of my friends has his like that, and my uncle has as well, but I tried everything to get it working- even disabled my firewall to see if that was the cause of the sign-in failure.

Eventually out of desparation, and having used a process of elimination, I signed up for a new hotmail a/c, and presto the MSNMsngrrrr sing-in worked. $*!@*&^# M$!!!
