I have some MP4 files (last two episodes of Firefly) that seem to have a weird audio codec. They won't play with AC3 (my usual silver bullet), or with ffdshow, or GOM Player (which has tons of integrated codecs). Obviously, they won't "just play" in media player. I tried a utility called GSpot to try and find out which codec to use, it couldn't show any information about the audio. Neither could GOM Player's file info feature.

How do I find out which codec to use for these files?

Video works fine.

(Alternatively, if anyone can suggest a source for these episodes, I'll re-download them.)

I'd try VLC and k-lite codec pack.:)
Both should work for just about anything out there.

He listed AC3, ffdshow, GOM Player, Media player and GSpot.

wiki on MP4 said:
Audio: AAC (also known as MPEG-2 Part 7), MP3 (also known as MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3), MPEG-4 Part 3, MP2 (also known as MPEG-1 Audio Layer 2), MPEG-1 Audio Layer 1, CELP (speech), TwinVQ (very low bitrates), SAOL (MIDI).

Both of you okes deleted freakin posts.

As the japs in Hollywood say: That was without honour.

Maybe I should start QFTing entire threads.

I don't know if I am stupid, but I normally just install nero. Then the mpeg4 codec is on the pc, and then I just play that files with mediaplayer.

Thanks for the suggestion, jacqvt - it *could* be that weird Nero codec.

As a matter of principle, I avoid Nero like the plague. It's proprietary, expensive and insanely bloated. Worse, I see too much stuff that, once Nero has touched it, only plays with Nero. I'm not sure what Nero does, but they clearly it does not use one of the, standard and freely available codecs that can be used with the MP4 container-format.

Perhaps this is the mysterious "NeroDigital AAC" codec, for which no stand-alone decoder seems to be available.

I downloaded another copy over public bittorent... because I could. Yeah, it cost me some bandwidth.... it's FIREFLY, for Pete's sake.
