MPs do not represent the people of Britain properly because they are too white, David Cameron has said.

The Prime Minister said there is "much more to be done" to encourage more people from ethnic minority backgrounds to enter Parliament.

Mr Cameron made the comments in a preface to a book, "Rainbow over Westminster", which charts the increasing number of MPs who are black or from ethnic minority backgrounds.

In the preface, Mr Cameron said that the book “serves as a reminder – that there is much more to be done.

“Our Parliament is still nowhere near representative enough of the country we live in today.

“We should not presume that this will simply correct itself over time. History isn’t written for us: it is written by us.”

Mr Cameron said that he hoped the book – which is edited by the Labour MP Keith Vaz, who became the first British Indian to sit in the Commons for over 60 years when he was elected in 1987 – would help “to open up politics further”.

Since the first MP was elected 172 years ago, there have been 38 ethnic minority MPs in the Commons. Today 26 out of 650 MPs are from BME backgrounds.

In the 2010 election 16 men and women from black and ethnic minority backgrounds were elected – a quintupling on the three who were elected in 1987.

I must say, the ethnic MP's and Lords have been pretty corrupt. Even Keith Vaz was imbroiled in an honesty scandal.

According to UK demographics almost 90% of the population are white/European so not to sure what he is on about. If you go by demographics then it should be close to completely white.....

I think David Cameron should recognise that he lives in Europe and not Asia or Africa...

Nah, they deserve some reverse colonisation. They still skim the cream off the world's trade activities, including our own mineral wealth. They might be a European country, but the heart of their economy has long been run by foreigners who duly pay their taxes to Lizzie and her cronies.

:wtf:

So, should Zuma (& the ANC)also recognise that they live in Africa and not in Europe? If thats the case, we shouldn't have White, Indian or Muslim MPs in our parly also.

Britain destroying itself from the inside... I must say in their history of causing probably the most despicable wars in the last 400 years I would not mind them disappearing.

Their time has simply come ;)

Representative of the population.

I think our parliament is representative of the population.

My point is England is 90% white so of course white people will dominate parliament. Just like black people dominate parliament here.

Found this old post from a different forum, but it says it all....

What being British means:

Being Bitish is about driving in a german car
to an Irish pub
for a belgian beer,
then on the way home, grab an Indian curry
or a Turkish kebab
to sit on a swedish sofa
to watch American shows
on a Japanese TV.
And most of all being suspicious of anything Foreign.

Only in Britain do banks leave both doors open but chain pens to the counter.
Also supermarkets make sick people walk to the back of the shop for prescriptions whilst healthy people get their fags at the front of the shop.

Some people should realise that ethnicity and nationality are not the same thing.

I'm no fan if Cameron, I didn't vote for the Tories.

You(and others) criticise Cameron for saying that the +- 10% of minorities should have a representation that matches their share of the population but you are the first to whine when the likes of Malema etc want to totally exclude white South Africans from South African life because they are of European heritage and not African heritage. Hypocrits.

Straw man. When has Malema expressed a desire to exclude white South Africans from SA life?

Regardless, the difference between SA and the UK is that in SA whites and other minorities are actively involved in politics and every other sphere because they involve themselves.

There are no legal barriers in the UK that bars minorities from participating in government. It's safe to assume that if minorities were interested in being represented by people of their own race or ethnicity they would be.

If Cameron feels so strong about this, why doesn't he resign to make way for a minority Prime Minister?

Yeah lets see him put his money where his mouth is ..
