The entire series was about one of Ellliot's personalities, namely Elliot-the-Mastermind, which was created at the time the series started.
We never really meet the real Elliot, just glimpses of him occasionally when we are thrown into the world the mastermind has created for him.
Although the story with the dark army concludes in the 9th episode, the last 3 episodes is essentially about resolving Elliot's issues, more specifically, about the mastermind coming to terms with the fact he is not the real Elliot, and over and above that, now that his role has been completed, giving the real Elliot back his life.
This hit me the most, because as you think back, you realise the real Elliot is unaware Angela is dead, and he was under the impression he was going to marry her (today). The hack, his boss dying etc are all events he is oblivious to.
Other movies such as Fight Club have dipped their toes into this world, but Mr Robot took a deep dive into exploring schizophrenia. I'm definitely going to have to watch this a few times over to fully comprehend and appreciate the detail of Sam's writing and directing.
