Hi Guys.

I don't suppose any one of you could give me the steps needed to set up our Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 on our server PC to receive external e-mail from the various Digital Addiction E-mail addresses and send these e-mails to the specific computers that need to receive them. I can't find a decent tutorial on the net, or at least not one that I can figure out how to follow. Any help would be great :)

Techie ... you still out there ;)

Regards

Itai

Have u tried the ms technet websiet , msexchange.org and the exchange help file ?

Yes, yes and yes ... I just can't find a straight forward all in one tutorial ... they all comprise of 5 million tutorials to set up all different things, and I can't figure out how to get them to talk to each other.

BUMP ... would anyone in Jhb be willing to come over and set it up for us if I paid you a small fee :)

You need to setup a receive connector under the server settings to receive email for your org. You need to do the same for sending as well.

Basically setup all the domains you want inbound and then setup the policy to assign them to all the mailboxes. I think the tab is called "Domains that are handled by this org" or something similar.

This might help.

Basically if you don't have another server setup as the edge server you need to set the connector permissions to anonymous so any external server can send to it. I had the exact same issue when I setup my own exchange server at home.

Is all you DNS setup correctly? Give us some more details.

eitai : What exactly are you needing to have happen?

Are you needing to downloaded from an external pop server into exchange? or are you going to have mail routed via MX records directly to the exchange server? once you have the email, are you keeping it on the local network and just using outlook to open it, or are you needing to then forward it on to a different email address?

Currently I have about 16 or so e-mail addresses configured as POP e-mail addresses with my hosting provider, and all configured in Thunderbird. Each PC in the office at the moment has to download a copy of the messages. So now I want to use exchange server to do the following through a central server:

1) Connect to POP server to receive e-mails (Can either use all 16 or so e-mails, or 1 catchall ... not sure what I need to use though).

2) Download all messages onto the server.

3) Distribute the messages to the PC's on the local network.

4) Need the ability to access the messages and sent messages from a Remote Computer and a Windows Mobile phone.

"have mail routed via MX records directly to the exchange server" - How does this work, is it better then Pop ... and if it doesn't cost more, then this sounds like it would be better??

Ahhh, ok.. so you're kind of jury-rigging an exchange server to do stuff....

You'll need to get something like GFI-Mail Essentials Pop2Exchange tool (there are prob free alternatives)

You'll need outlook on all the machines, as well as setting up OWA and if you're looking for the winmobile access, you might need to setup DirectPush as well which can be finnicky.

The MX record stuff will require you to have a perm net connection, idealy with a static IP address and you'll need to expose your Exchange server's SMTP server to the net....

It works much better if you have an always on internet connection. If you have a static IP you can simply point the MX record to the static IP and configure your PAT on your router to send the ports to the exchange server. This way your email is delivered directly and you can manage your own email.

Exchange 2007 is a bit tricky to setup so would probably be best if you could get someone out to do it for you. I could do it remotely which would mean you need to give me all your logon details to the server and your DNS provider and your router. If you get dynamically assigned ip's from your service provider you'd need to use DynDNS or similar.
