ok, I am in the wrong place to try and resolve this I know, but I cannot get access to google or any microsoft site and you guys was way to helpfull last time, so I thought I'll pick your brains.

Tonight I installed MS Office 2003 and during this installation I got a message saying that a port security vulnerability has been identified and I need some updates for it. (WinXP SP2) So it went to the web interface and I got the downloads and updated it, rebooted. After that MSN would not sign in, nor can I access Google or Microsoft support to research the problem. MSN troubleshooter finds everything fine and indicates a problem with key ports. I also need to be able a https location for work purposes, that also doesn't work. Obviously this site works fine, so does some other forums as well as my MS Outlook mail send and recieve (phew! :) ), oh and so does internet banking login.

So I booted my laptop up and tried on that where the last update was not installed. It connects wirelessly through a netgear router to my iburst modem (Router level ISP connection through iBurst modem). I logged into my work VPN that takes IE through a proxy connection, and MSN plus work Https location works fine. The went off VPN and removed the proxy server. poof same problem, no MSN, no google, no microsoft support site.

WTH?!?!?!

OK, here's what I tried. IE, tools, advanced, SSL3 and TSL1.0 is ticked as IE7 network connection "wizard" suggested. 'Rebooted' modem, 'rebooted' router. No luck thus far.

As it looks to me is that the patch made some change on the router and/or modem, but I can't anything on router setup relating to that. MTU is still 1352. Desktop links via LAN to router and laptop wireless to router.

HELP! F1!!F1!!F1!!F1!!F1!!F1!!

I had sp2 already installed. I did try disabling firewall.

I went through my VPN now and searched the MS KB's. I check for a winsock2 corruption, but my 10 protocols are there as well. mmmmmmmm!!!??

Here is the network diagnostics section that is buggin me...

ok, also saw your post now.

you mean restore as in "netsh winsock reset catalog" ?

argh, now don't laugh. When I installed the windows and ms office update (key port vulnerability), it must've reset my MTU to 1492. I ran DrTCP again, rebooted and voila, it works fine again.

I had to have a good chuckle at myself. Administrator how do I delete this topic so I don't have the entire community falling off their chairs laughing???? :D :D

lol @ funguye

don't worry, us sysadmins also do a lot of stupid things, like panicking before thinking things through - and in this panic stage one tend to post things in a hurry... :D
