MS Outlook and compatibility with Open Source mailing software

Oi, I'm about to be retrenched and realised that I have Gigs worth of data in MS Outlook format. I researched and you can import PST folder into Thunderbird BUT you have to have Outlook installed at the same time otherwise it wont import.

Having Outlook installed is not possible for me!! Any other ideas on how I can access my personal mail in my foreseeable future.
