Thought Id ask here,
maybe Im missing something else

Office 365 package A1 in particular,
cant switch on MS teams recording, option greyed out,

checked here:
says you need a E1/E3/E5 license,

but then another resource says its turned on by default, and you should be able to.
now not sure, checked teams admin console, indeed allow cloud recording is turned on,

but still clients side its turned off,
do they need the extra license, or can you indeed record with office license A1?

Just create a meeting first and let everyone join. Then you should be able to record. I've had this a few times and solved it as such...

Well we had a sub to 365 not sure about the other people who joined in.

Why don't you just use the XBox Game Bar?
Windows Button + G

The A1 license is the problem. It needs to be A3 and up.

Is Microsoft Stream available in RSA yet? Otherwise you may need a Europe based Office 365 Tenant. Or setting some parameter somewhere like AllowRecordingStorageOutsideRegion. I'd need to double check that though.

  1. Confirm Global CsTeamsMeetingPolicy has AllowCloudRecording = True
  2. All users have the Global CsTeamsMeetingPolicy OR one of the CsTeamsMeetingPolicy policies with AllowCloudRecording = True

checked both settings in teams console, both seem to be enabled,
but still unsure about the licensing issue.

A1 license, do I need to upgrade them to E1? to see if it should work?

tried that, option simply greyed out, very annoying,
thought maybe other people from outside our organization have the correct licenses.
and thats how it worked previously.

Both the meeting organizer and the recorder must have Office 365 Enterprise E1, E3, or E5 licenses. An IT admin must provide a recording license to both the meeting organizer and the recorder. Guests or federated users can't record meetings or calls.

This was a recent message to our organisation. Not sure if it is helpful or not.

Major update: Announcement started
Applied To: All

Starting December 18, we're changing how 1:1 Call recording is enabled. Currently, 1:1 Call recording is controlled by the -CsTeamsMeetingPolicy / AllowCloudRecording attribute. We're now changing it so that 1:1 Call recording can be controlled by its own policy. This means that after December 18, 1:1 Call recording will be controlled by the -CsTeamsCallingPolicy / allowCloudRecordingForCalls attribute.

By default this new policy attribute will be set to false, so 1:1 call recording will not work unless you change this attribute to true.
[Key Points:]
  • Timing: December 18, 2020
  • Control: via PowerShell
  • Action: Review settings and make changes by December 18, 2020
[How this will affect your organization:]
If you are currently using 1:1 Call recording and would like to continue doing so, please update the -CsTeamsCallingPolicy / allowCloudRecordingForCalls attribute to true. You can do this immediately, and do not need to wait until December 18. If you do not change the attribute, once the policy enforcement is rolled out, users using the 1:1 Call recording feature will be able to use this feature.
[What you need to do to prepare:]
Review your policy settings for 1:1 Call recording and update the attribute for the experience you prefer. If you do not want to have 1:1 Call recording enabled, you do not need to do anything as the default value of the attribute will be false.

you had it right @RedViking , right on the money.
but it goes deeper than that, after speaking to a MS support agent and opening a case, they inform me something quite disturbing.

apparently until the upgrades are done, ALL teams recording is turned off in SA, until Jan 11 2021, then it will get turned back on globally
also as per my understanding, if you host in SA (like my client does) your sh*t out of luck, as its disabled and impossible to turn on till then.
they did walk me through the commands necessary to enable it when it comes online After Jan 11 2021, but then its impossible to turn on NOW.
(guess thats a Microsoft solution to a problem, turn it off for everybody)

anybody able to confirm this on their Office 365 clients using teams that host locally in SA?

Thanks for the feedback...that's very interesting. Wonder if it is a capacity issue?

I have an NZ account. Will need to check if it effects me. If that is the case Microsoft is pathetic.

another question for the Microsoft Teams fundis out there,

do you HAVE to Have the license as well to record meetings in Teams?
that being E1/E3 or E5?
like I mentioned we have A1, and we especially brought (one) licence for E1,

only to find out Pathetic Microsoft turned it off for everybody.

thinking if I should ask for a reversal to happen.
