I spoke to a Telkom technician about when I can expect VDSL in my area. He rolled his eyes and said that as far as he can tell MSAN roll-out stopped. The MSAN's that were put down were mostly on existing fiber routes and that the FTTH is just going into the MSAN's already placed.

He said that MSAN roll-out was mostly done by 3rd party contractors - and those contractors are gone...

I don't want to infer too much from what one technician says... But it sounds pretty scary.

But not sure how to get to the facts... I guess the question I can ask... Does anybody know of new MSAN's put down in the last 2/3 months? not just activated... Actually newly installed where no infrastructure existed before? And where?

I never had any fibre in my area end of 2012/2013 they were digging trenches laying fibre the (coloured cables)

Its true with regards to 3rd party contractors i often see DFA busy with MSAN'S in my area. Im pretty sure they installed the fibre in the ground too. but i don't believe its stopped. When they were installing in my area they sat inactive for almost a year and only in Feb/March this year they were activated.

Not true. They made a mess of the initial installs and these need to be sorted out before they make a bigger mess. Ask that techie what's happening in Wynberg, Tygerberg, Clareinch, Brackenfell, etc.

What do you mean by "a mess"?

They were laying fibre conduits, there's no fibre in there, those are hollow plastic tubes. The fibre gets blow through later.

Here in Noordhoek they laid the fiber and MSANs in the past 3 months. But as of right now only 1 of the MSANs are active and that is the one in the exchange as Telkom are having municipality issues with the way they are getting power to the MSANs on the corners.

But they have since decided to stop the MSAN deployment and rather concentrate on deploying GPON technology here which is basically fiber to home, as then they don't need the municipalitys permission.
