We're booked for a 4 night cruise next month and are a bit confused w.r.t. the dinner dress codes.

I have heard that the dress code for dinner is formal with a jacket. Or is this only for the Captain's Dinner / Ball?

What about the dress codes for kids? The only long pants my one son has is his school trousers, and the other only has jeans & cargo pants. None of them have any formal shoes except for school shoes.

What about me? I don't even own a formal jacket.

In my experience it's a mixed bag - some people go all out and wear formal dinner jackets, others just "smart casual".

Dinner attire...
Suggested guidelines for these nights are:
Casual: Sport shirts and slacks for men, sundresses or pants for women
Smart Casual: Jackets and ties for men, dresses or pantsuits for women

Remember, shorts, T-shirts, and bathing suits are not considered appropriate attire in the dining rooms at dinner. Casual dress dining is available nightly at the buffet.

What theme nights can I expect whilst on board?*

3nt + Cruises – Tropical Party Night - Dress in Tropical attire

4nt + Cruises – Meet the Captain as part of our Italian Night (Semi-formal)

5nt + Cruises – Gala Night (Semi-formal)

5nt + Cruises – Retro Night (Music of the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s)

7nt + Cruises – A Second Gala Night (Semi-formal)

10nt + Cruises – Neon Party - Dress in your lightest and brightest

* Theme nights vary from cruise to cruise depending on itinerary and weather conditions

Jeans and a button shirt is more than enough. Jeans & T shirt for them should be fine.
I never saw anyone actually wear a tie while I was on a cruise, admittedly most of us were from CT.
CT formal is like the European casual. :p
Learnt that after being overdressed for a couple of formal events.

Just don't dress like a hobo or rock up like you're on the beach and you'll be fine.

I normally just used jeans and a t-shirt.

I think the Captain's dinner is the only formal night...

I'll wear shirts for dinner and let the boys dress in their decent shorts & Ts.
So the non-stained ones :P

PS. Not judgeing.. I have kids. I know it's impossible for them to keep their clothes clean.

I was also stressing about dress code but when you get there you will see no one cares.Just dont look like a hobo.

Will they seriously not let you eat if you rock up in shorts?

Having done three 5 night cruises I can honestly say it doesn't really matter. You will find the old timers get all dollied up come dinner time but the rest a jeans and shirt.

Even the Captains ball you will find a mixed bunch, some dress to the high-nines while others don't.

If you feel uncomfortable there's always the buffets.

Smart casual. E.g. Long trousers/jeans with a collard shirt and no tekkies.

That said, quite a number of people don't give a shyte and dine with tshits and boardshorts.

I, personally, wanted to dress a little smarter for their dinners as it compliments the setting and the food. We also like to have some of their pro-photographers take pictures of us so those evenings are when we also dress-up for that, aside from just dinner.

Don't worry about dressing your kids in their Sunday best, you know how they need to look to be presentable.
