If you need a complete AMD-powered system, the K9A2 is what you’ve been looking for.

MSI has several AMD chipset-based motherboards, and the K9A2 Platinum is primarily designed for power users and enthusiasts. It doesn’t feature an on-board graphics accelerator, but then again, it isn’t designed for that market.

For the AMD platform, there currently isn’t a better chipset than the 790FX, as it is the only chipset available that supports four PCI Express fulllength slots.

It means that you can run a maximum of four dualslot graphics cards in CrossFireX mode or two X2-type cards for a total of four GPUs.

The MSI board also features official support for DDR2 1,066MHz RAM, but keep in mind that it only works with even-number multipliers. So, if you want to run your RAM at 1,066MHz, be mindful of this limitation.

Everything else on this board is as you would expect from a high-end motherboard. It doesn’t feature dual Gigabit Ethernet, but does feature optical output for HD audio, FireWire connectivity and dual eSATA connectors.

In terms of performance, it may not match other similarly priced motherboards based on the NVIDIA 780a chipset, but the differences in performance are negligible and should not affect applications.
