Hi

MSN messenger has been loading on startup since i got my computer and i dont use it at all so i dont want it to startup when windows starts. How do i get it to stop loading in my taskbar every time i get into windows?

The MSN Messenger uses TCP port 1863 as its default service port.
However, we find that MSN Messenger will change it's service port to
80 whenever the application detects that it can't connect to server
via port 1863.

So, to block the MSN Messenger service with a ZyWALL device, you have to perform the following steps

1. Create a firewall rule to block the TCP port 1863 in
"LAN to WAN" direction.
2. In Content Filter, enter keyword "gateway.messenger.hotmail.com"
in keyword blocking section.

Afaik there is a setting within MSN to disable "Loading at Windows StartUp" or alternatively I use a utility program like "autoruns" to remove anything from starting up when XP boots.

Will give it a try..

I use a little proggie called, "Shoot the Messenger"

There is a difference between the Windows Messenger Service and MSN Messenger.

The Windows Messenger Service is the component that displays the scrolling alert box in the right hand side of the taskbar and has nothing to do with chat program.

aternative: go to start> RUN> type msconfig > go to startup tab >unclick msmsg > apply then restart your comp

alll the methods mentioned above will not completely remove msn messenger. something about it being built into windows (if u wanna confirm, just press ctrl + alt + del and go to task manager and go to processes. there u will still see msmsgs.exe or something like that, which is the messenger application still running in the background). to COMPLETELY remove messenger from your pc, go to start -> run and copy and paste the following code without the quotes:

"RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\inf\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove"

there, messenger is now gone. forever. well, until for some obscure reason u wanna reinstall it again
