Ok this is a fresh install Win7 64-bit and MSE, after updated the virus definitions and about 84 windows updates the frigging thing now flatlines the cpu even though it's not scanning or anything. Only other things installed so far are picasa, skype & vlc.

I've had this problem once before but on XP and after trying for a day I could not fix it and resorted to uninstalling MSE and installing Avira.

Any ideas?

Found this while trawling the web:

1. Open Microsoft Security Essential program.
2. Click settings tab
3. Excluded files and Locations
4. Click on Add button.
5.Select the path c:\program files\microsoft security essentials\MsMpEng.exe
6. Click ok.
7. Click on Save changes.
8. Close Microsoft Security Essential program.
9. Restart the computer.

I also read that certain processes get identified as a threat, MSSE then tries to stop it and thereby chows CPU cycles. Try temporarily disabling non-critical processes to see if one of them might be the culprit Another trick is to disable file indexing. It supposedly also causes the 100% CPU problem with MSSE.

thanks.

I see the bloody thing is still installing updates so I will leave it until all updates are done and then see if the problem is still around. If the problem is still around then I'm uninstalling MSSE, you should not have to jump through so may hoops to make a AV program work. A google search reveals it's still a common problem for some people. Let's wait and see what happens in the mean time.

Problem seems to have sorted itself out after some more updates were installed. Still busy with some updates but hopefully all is good.

Hope so as well.

.NET has now decided to start spiking the CPU after all the updates as it's obviously compiling stuff that came down with the updates.
I'm running "ngen.exe executequeueditems" from the .NET executable folder in order to speed this up so it's now chowing 100% cpu so I'll wait for it to finish.
