Hi Again,

Can I please find out where and how I can go about getting a 3G enabled sim for my phone (6680). I am on a Procall120 contract (company cell) and would like to keep my existing number.

All the places I tried to get a card, tell me they don't have stock and I should wait for them to get back to me. None ever do, but I'm not surprised. That's the service levels we can expect here in SA.

You can have 3G enabled on your existing SIM, you dont have to have a USIM. Call your Service Provider and ask them to activate the data services for you. Its as easy as that!

Usim

Hi ScrnScrm,

Thanks. I tried contacting my Service provider. They mentioned that to activate Video calling and other 3G options, I would need to upgrade my SIM. Are you sure that I don't need to change my SIM?

Yes I am sure. You only HAVE to have the USIM if you are going to do international roaming. Although I would recommend the SIM upgrade anyway (they bundle in some trial data packages with it to make it worth your while), you CAN get up and running with your existing SIM in the interim. Dont let them bully you!

I could have put my head on a block that I read somewhere in the posts that to get video calling you also need the USIM, but searching the forums I can't find it. Not that I consider video calling a good enough reason to get a USIM:

1. I need to have phone with video calling capabilities.
2. I need to be in a 3G enabled area.
3. I need to call someone with a phone with video calling capibilities.
4. They need to be in a 3G enabled area when I phone them.
5. If they're not, I leave a video message provided they have video mail.

The logistics of this is just way too much...

Prepaid customers should go to any MTN store to have their SIM card upgraded to a 32K SIM. This carries a cost which varies from store to store. The maximum is about R140.

In order to simplify things for customers we offered 3G service (videocalling and higher data speeds) without a USIM (3G sim). The USIM activates the current promotion (free promotional data bundles and videocall minutes on certain packages)

If you go overseas and roam you may need a USIM (depending on the rules of the overseas network).

Yep, the promotional package more than paid for my USIM (300 megs on Procall 120) :D

Is the promotion still going? I thought it ended at the end of July.
