MTN 3G Modem with External Antenna

My uncle lives on a farm in the Northern Cape - he's got an external antenna setup with an old cellphone (he gets a decent signal on the old cellphone which connects directly to the antenna). However he recently got a 3G modem and he can only connect to it using an induction plate - the loss on it is too great and it's basically unusable.

2 Questions:
1) Are there any newer phones which allow an external antenna to be connected directly?

2) What 3G modems are there that can be connected directly to an external antenna?
