MTN's R400m boost for SA soccer
The Premier Soccer League has announced another big windfall with MTN committing R400-million over five years to the sport. The cellular communications giant has also taken over the title sponsorship of the Top 8 knockout tournament.

The MTN 8 Knockout will feature South Africa's top eight clubs doing battle for a lucrative R8-million winner-takes-all prize. The tournament's catch phrase will be "Wafa Wafa!" which, roughly translated, means "last man standing".

The format gives the clubs and players extra motivation to win, but each team will receive R800 000 simply for participating.

The prize money is significantly improved over last year's figures, which saw Mamelodi Sundowns, as winners, taking home R1.3-million and runners-up Orlando Pirates pocketing R750 000.

MTN 8: Supersport 2 - 1 Orlando Pirates
The new MTN Top 8 competition kicked off with a bang last night when league champions Supersport came up against Orlando Pirates in the first quarter final's of the tournament.

MTN has taken over from SAA as tournament sponsor and have changed the prize money format significantly. The tournament now works on a winner takes all basis with the eventual winners picking up R8 million!

Premier Soccer League Champions Supersport United picked up where they left off last season when they pulled off a deserved 2-1 victory over Rudi Krol's Pirates.

It was the Buccaneers who were off to a great start when new signing Kanono put them ahead after Josephy Kamwendo’s excellent pass released Bennett Chenene who was clean through on goal. Supersport's keeper Dennis Onyango did manage to save Chenene's weak shot but Kanono was on hand to bang in the rebound.

United equalised in the 21st minute of the match through a spectacular goal from Ethiopian striker Fikru Teferra. Elias Pelembe sent in a looping cross and Tefera was on hand in the crowded penalty area to Finnish with a spectacular overhead kick.

Supersport were now in the ascendancy and could have been ahead minutes later only for Meyiwa to brilliantly save Katlego Mashego's shot from six yards out. Then the the former SA under-23 keeper pulled of an even better save when he stopped Fikru's rebound.

Klate had another chance to give Supersport the lead in the 39th minute when he looked offsides but referee Daniel Bennett failed to see his assistant's flag. The United winger was allowed to play on but his shot hit the side netting.

Bucs should have taken the lead five minutes after half time but their new midfield signing from Free State Stars Thulasizwe Mbuyane blew a great chance when found himself one on one with Puersport's keeper but the midfielder lost control of the ball which allowed the defender to get back and disposes him.

Klate came very close to getting the elusive second goal in the 63rd minute when his header hit the Pirate's crossbar. It was a narrow escape for Pirates.
Supersport thought they had a penalty on 72 minutes when Pelembe went down in the box but referee Daniel Bennett handed him the first yellow card of the new season.

A minute later Klate missed another sitter when he headed against the side netting when he was unmarked and could have picked his spot in the back of the net.

United eventually managed to take the lead when substitute Laffor provided an excellent volley at the back post 8 minutes from time.

Bucs were saved again by the woodwork in injury time when Pelembe drove a fierce shot against the woodwork with Meyiwa well beaten.

MTN 8: Swallows 4 - 3 Ajax CT
The MTN 8 tournament is proving to be a big success on the field with yet another action packed quarter final match that left the fans screaming for more. This time it was the new look Moroka Swallows coming up against Premier Soccer League runners up Ajax Cape Town.

The kicked off at a frantic pace with both teams looking to secure a place in the semi's and it was the beautiful Birds who dominated the first half with some sublime football. Swallows deservedly took the lead as early as the 8th minute when their captain Tsutsulupa lobbed the ball over the Ajax keeper from the tightest of angles after the four Ajax defenders failed to clear a cross by Sandile Ndlovu.

Ajax had a chance to level matters in the 20th minute when Vilikazi met Sameegh Doutie's free kick but his header went over the bar.

Swallows doubled their lead in the 36th minute after a lovely reverse flick by Tsutsulupa sent Sandile Ndlovu clean through, the Swallows striker made no mistake when one on one with the keeper, rounding him before rolling the ball into the back of the Ajax net.

The Birds could have made it 3-0 in the 41st minute, when Ndlovu again broke through the off sie trap but this time the striker decided to chip the ball over the keeper. Lucikly for Ajax his lob went just wide.

Swallows had Ajax on the back foot and had another chance to extend their lead just before half time , when Haskins ran onto a through ball from the Tsutsulupa, but he arrowed his shot narrowly wide of the far post.

Ajax could not wait for the half time whistle and were fortunate to be trailing by only two goals.

Ajax started the second half like a different team ready to pull of a comeback that woiuld see them advance to the next round and were rewarded for their efforts in the 49th minute when Brett Evans side footed the ball into the Swallows net from a Doutie corner. Game on!

Ajax were dealt a heavy blow when they were reduced to 10 men in the 83rd minute, when Nhlanhla Shabalala was sent off for a second bookable offense.

Ajax taught they pulled level when Franklin Cale volleyed shot looked to have crossed the line butthe referee decided that the ball had not crossed the line. However there would be no denying Ajax when they did pull level in injury time through Brazilian defender Eduardo Ferreira fired in a powerful drive from the edge of the area to send the game into extra time.

Swallows went ahead again in extra time from a Ryan Botha corner. Afonso flicked the ball towards goal where it was met by Morgan Shivambuto who headed it into the back of the net.

Ajax were sent down to nine men in the 113th minute, when Khubeka received a red card for a professional foul on Phumlile Bengu who would have been clean through on goal.

Swallows put the result beyond doubt when Botha made it 4-2 an easy tap-in after some shocking defending from the 9 men Ajax. New signing Khenyeza pulled a consolation goal back for Ajax in the final minute of the game.

MTN 8: Kaizer Chiefs 4 - 0 Santos
3 Games, 14 Goals. The MTN 8 is really proving to be a brilliant tournament showcasing the best of South African football. After the start that Pirates, Supersport, Ajax and Moroka Swallows made it would have been hard to imagine that the football would get much better but tonight at Loftus Stadium Kaizer Cheifs put on the best performance yet when they demolished Santos by four goals to nil!

Gert Schalkwyk received the man of the match award and deservedly so when the midfielder wrapped the game up for Chiefs after an unbelievable opening 26 minutes that saw Chiefs rip the Santos defense apart to race to a 3 goal lead before the half hour mark.

The 26-year-old had a hand in all four of Chief's goals, scoring two and setting up Torrealba and Reneilwe Letsholonyane's goals.

Schalkwyk opened the scoring for Amakhosi when he took Quarty's pass in his stride before slipping the ball past Santos' Lee Langeveldt in goal.

Next it was Chiefs' new striker's turn. Torrealba hammering the ball into the roof of Santos the net after great work from Schalkwyk on the by line.

In the 26th minute Schalkwyk wrapped up the game for Chiefs when Onismor Bhasera played a low cross into the Santos box that Schalkwyk tapped in after a clever dummy from Arthur Zwane left him unmarked. This was clinical finishing at it's very best from Mushin Ertugal's boys.

Letsholonyane scored Chiefs' fourth in the 58th minute after yet another assist from Gert Schalkwyk. Schalkwyk received the ball all of 30 yards out and with his back to goal he sent a defense splitting through ball into Letsholonyane's path. Letsholonyane made no mistake with a clinical finish under the diving Santos goalkeeper.

With that goal Chiefs wrapped up the game and booked their place in the semi finals of the MTN 8.

Sorry for posting all the results at the same time. Was a bit busy between watching the matches and writing the match reports.
Absolutely enjoyed all three matches thus far.:)
Any chance that some of you guys managed to catch a game?:)

How is the level of football in S.Africa compared to the other African countries ?

How is the level of football in S.Africa compared to the other African countries ?

Not that good i'm afraid. Last time i checked the SA Premier Soccer League was ranked 14th in Africa.
Financially though we have the most lucrative league.
Last time a South African team won the African Champions league was in 1996(i think):(

MTN 8: Sundowns 1 - 0 Free State Stars
Patrice Motespe's expensively assembled Mamelodi Sundowns booked their place in the semi finals of the new lucrative MTN 8 with a hard fought 1-0 win over Free State Stars.

Sundowns were definitely the better team on the day but looked disjointed at times with both teams needlessly giving away possession in the early parts of the game. After the previous three quarter finals we probably had one low scoring game coming and this was it. Sundowns wasted chance after chance while Stars barely created one decent scoring chance the entire match.

Sundowns got off to good start and the Brazilians should have been one goal up as early as the 7th minute when new signing Vilikazi unleashed a powerful drive from outside the box which Stars' keeper Kennedy Mweene spilled, Mphele was on hand for the rebound but disappointingly placed his shot wide when it looked easier to score.

The best effort of a dull first half came when Lerato Chabangu unleashed a powerful close range shot after beating two Stars' defenders only for Mweene to pull off a sublime save to keep the score level.

Stars' only real chance of the half were from a couple of off target long range efforts.

The second half started much better as both teams looked more comfortable on the ball and were stringing some passes together which resulted in both keepers being tested early on.

First it was Brian Baloyi who was called into action when he had to save a shot from Prince Olomu in the 54th minute, then Stars' Mweene showed his class again with a superb save from Suprise Moiriri.

Vilakazi nearly scored on his competitive debut for Sundowns when he fired in a shot at Mweene's goal after a great run but again the Zimbabwean keeper saved the effort.

With both teams wasting their chances the match headed for extra time and it was Sundowns who were yet again denied the opening goal when Vilikazi hit the bar with a header in the 95th minute. There would be no denying the impressive Katlegho Mphela though, the striker finally breaking the deadlock in the 98th minute when the striker stabbed the ball into the back of the net after good work from substitute Dario Monteiro.

Sundowns never looked like conceding and held on for the win to book their place in the semi's along with Supersport United, Kaizer Chiefs and Moroka Swallows

Good to see Schalkwyk performing well, after long inactivity.

Can't wait for the season to start.

MTN 8: Kaizer Chiefs 2 - 0 Moroka Swallows

Kaizer Chiefs are one step closer to the MT 8 finals after a convincing 2-0 victory against Moroka Swallows at Loftus Stadium last night. Chiefs dominate the match and could easily have scored more but Mushin Etrugal will be happy with another impressive performance from his team.

Chiefs took the lead in the 10th minute after some lovely build up play between Bashera, Torrealba and Schalkwyk. Bashera played a lovely through ball into the Venezuelan striker's path which he flicked on to Schalkwyk who then buried the ball in the Swallows net with a low shot.

Chiefs then doubled their lead 10 minutes later when Torrealba scored after Reneilwe Letsholonyane's header went straight to the Venezuelan striker.

Kaizer Chiefs were now looking very dangerous and showed signs of repeating their 4-0 victory against Santos in the quarter finals.

Swallows were determined to get back in the match though and had a couple of half chances through Sandile Ndlovu but the Birds could not find the breakthrough.

Schalkwyk had the chance to increase Amakhosi's lea just before the break but ballooned his shot into the crowed after receiving a through ball.

Chiefs took their foot off the pedal in the second half which allowed Swallows to come back into the game and Rancin nearly pulled a goal back for the Birds when his powerful free kick struck the crossbar.

Swallows fought for what would have been a valuable away goal but the Chiefs defense stood string and held out for the 2-0 win.

Chiefs now have the advantage going into the second leg having not conceded an away goal.

MTN 8: Sundowns 2 - 1 Supersport
Sundowns will take a slight advantage heading into the second leg after the Brazilians secured a hard fought 2-1 victory against Premier Soccer League champions Supersport United.

Sundowns will now go into the second leg knowing that they will have to score two goals to win if Supersport score against them.

Sundowns took the lead in an exciting match when Chilean midfielder scored after the Supersport goalkeeper fumbled his first shot. Zuma played the ball back into the midfielder's path and he had no trouble converting with his second attempt.

Supersport tried to get back into the game and nearly pulled a goal back after some excellent play from Pelembe and Carelse presented Dane Klate with a chance but his shot was cleared off the line by Mabizela.

United did get their deserved equalising goal in first half injury time when former Sundowns player Brent Carelse headed in from a Dane Klate free kick.

The second half was a much tighter affair with both teams struggling to create many clear chances. Suprise Moiriri restored Sundowns' lead in the 58th minute when the striker found himself unmarked after a bad clearance from Ricardo Katza and slammed the ball into the back of United's net.

Sundowns managed to hold on for the victory but were dealt a major blow when new signing Zuma was sent off in the dieing minutes of the match after picking up his second yellow card.

Chiefs were fantastic in this game. Especially in the first half.
I've been hearing that the whole morning at work.:)Just shows you what happens when club's give a coach a chance and dont fire them after the first bad season.
I think Etrugal is building something great at Chiefs and they will be team to bea when the PSL starts.
