MTN and Google in Battle?

Botnets constantly scanning ranges and ports to look for vulnerabilities keeps the radio active preventing itfrom sleeping.

With a natted ip the botnets from tbe internet can only reach the nat interface where traffic is dropped. It never reaches the end subscriber.

How would you make sure not to have a public ip?

On the phone check what IP you get. Should be somewhere under status or network status.

If you have a natted ip it ahould be something like 10. Or 100. Or 172.17. Or 192.16

Would this be the public IP shown on Google or other websites? Mine is in the 41 range.

No. The internet will always see that public ip even if your device is natted.

You need to check on the router or phone itself for the ip

You would basically need to confirm the on-device IP vs. the one Google reports as your public IP. IF they differ, then you're likely natted.

As far as I could figure out, you can't see the mobile data IP on an iPhone - only if you Google "what's my IP" or similar.

Yes that is a natted IP

That is natted. It's a private IP range which is not routable over the internet so it needs to go through a nat machine which has a public IP facing the internet. That public IP is shared because of ip exhaustion not every device can have a public IP because there aren't enough.

Ok so I’m assuming near every smartphone address will be natted because the networks won’t have enough ip range to give each device a public IP?

Yes and no. You can get unrestricted APNs which in essence grants you a dynamic but public IP address. This is for example required if you want to run say IP cameras over your LTE / 5G home router and want to connect directly to the cameras via the internet. This means your network CPE (e.g. your router or phone) needs to have a public IP and should be listening for incoming requests. I should also say most consumer camera brands have a cloud service which works fine via a natted solution.

These days you usually have to ask for unrestricted APNs on the networks - and increasingly even on fibre ISPs
 
Thanks for the recommendation. Can definitely see a difference when in WARP mode (1.1.1.1 app) vs. disconnected (direct to MTN).

MTN:
- Default Gateway IP: 100.97.11.82
- DNS Server: 209.212.97.1 and 209.212.96.1 (and when using 1.1.1.1 it changes to 192.0.2.2 and 192.0.2.3)
- external IP: 41.121.81.xxx. A whois indicates that this belongs to MTN Business Solutions, which makes sense (Using 1.1.1.1 in non-WARP mode keeps the address the same, but when using WARP mode it changes to a 104.28.222.39 address, and a whois indicates that it belongs to CLOUDFLARENET which one would expect)
- No IPv6 info

- Under "DATA SIM Information" it lists the IP address as 100.97.11.xxx which indicates a private address and thus "internal". It stays the same when using 1.1.1.1 DNS mode.

So conclusion: I'm behind a NAT and thus not directly on the public internet.

Interestingly, the connection gains IPv6 details when connected via WARP mode. I take it 1.1.1.1/CloudFlare supports IPv6 and MTN does not.
