I want to get Mtn HSUPA for the main reason of using to Skype. What do you all think? Is it high risk that MTN will start charging higher data rates for VoIP?

I've used normal MTN Edge,3G & HSDPA for Skype on my N95 (via fring) and it seemed fine (oki Edge was a little dodgy but still worked).

Not sure how much better HSUPA will be :)

Just a FYI
I was reading thru MTN’s data bundle T&C, yea I know I’m the idiot that actually read this stuff :), but came across the following:

“8. In terms of the current regulatory regime in South Africa, please note that these tariffs and the MTN GPRS, GPRS+, EDGE or 3G technologies may not be used to transfer or generate Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) traffic. Should it be found that VoIP traffic was carried over the MTN network using these tariffs or technologies, MTN reserves the right to cancel the agreement that you have with MTN, with immediate effect. You will also be charged retrospectively at R21.93 per Megabyte (VAT excluded) for any VoIP traffic transferred by such means. “

I’m using Skype on a daily basis to communicate with friends and family all over the world using MTN’s 3G network and it looks like I’ve just been lucky not to receive have received ridicules phone bill. But if MTN is going to enforce the above, I’m going to seriously rethink using them as a data provider. I mean, what’s the point of paying them for an internet service, but am only allowed to use certain part of it.

That's been part of the Terms and Conditions of VC and MTN for yonks, seems like they are just covering their donkeys should they ever need to invoke it but it seems unlikely, as they would be shooting themselves in the foot given the amount of data they sell to users for VOIP.

as long as u got good signal Skype works well.
Considering how bad MTN's service is these days, so many people moaning, I guess they don't need any more reasons to chase customers away, they make good money from all the data, whatever we use it for. :D

Make sure you get the latest version of Skype... it's said to have "improved audio & video codecs" to enhance quality & reduce bandwidth needs.

Try GoogleTalk. It uses up at least half the bandwidth. I compared the 2.
One hour on skype used 30MB. One hour on Google Talk used 10MB. No diffs in quality. Webcam not used.
