Hey guys
So the previous month was the last month of an anytime 100 contract my mother had taken out with MTN wherein she pays R89pm. Knowing this, she'd expected not to pay the monthly fee of the contract for this month since she'd signed for 24 months and 24 months are now over. However, it turns out that MTN had indeed deducted the R89. A quick phone call to enquire after the matter reveals that if you don't notify them beforehand that you do not wish to cancel they will continue the contract. Thus you will continue to pay R89 for another 24 months (And indefinitely if you don't ever notify them?)
Is this true? Should they not have ended the contract instead of continuing it? My mother signed for a 24month contract, and yet here she is paying for 25months. I'm not that knowledgeable with contracts myself (having only one) and neither is my mother but this seems a bit fishy to me.
And even if this is indeed true, am I wrong in thinking that they should have at least notified my mother beforehand and asked her if she wished to upgrade? As things are now, she would have been much better off upgrading since that way she at least would have gotten a free cellphone with the airtime for her money instead of just the airtime.
Tl;dr Is my mother now liable for another 24 month contract, and will she have to pay the hefty cancellation fee if she wishes to cancel this contract which they've taken the liberty to renew without her consent?
