Spent quite a while trying to make sense of what MTN were telling me this morning. They claim although I get R438.60 per month, I will still be charged R1.95, and I will still somehow manage to squeeze 256 minutes out of that. Now by my calculations:
R500/R1.95 = approx. 256 mins (as advertised)
R438.60/R1.95 = approx. 225 mins (according to call centre)
When I check my airtime balance using the USSD menu, it tells me it's R438.60 - haven't checked on MTN Active yet. It doesn't say anything about VAT being inclusive or exclusive, however when you check the unbilled balance it says VAT excluded.
Another major issue I have is that any calls you make are only reflected on your balance after 24 hours. I'm finding it a major problem trying to budget my credit when I can't immediately see how much my out of bundle data, SMS and call usage is costing me. On Vodacom all their airtime contracts reflect credit almost immediately after it's used! Another issue is that the USSD menu doesn't load properly half the time!
EDIT: Another point the one MTN shop kept emphasizing when I tried setting a call limit, was that because calls take 24 hours to reflect, limits will only kick in 24 hours AFTER you hit your limit, so if you make a call and go over your limit, the call doesn't cut out! How ridiculous?
