This whole iPhone business has me in a bit of a conundrum. Firstly, the background: I currently subscribe to a Vodacom Talk500s package, and I'm in the 24th month of my current contract.

Then came the iPhone. I've been waiting months for the bloody thing, and now I've decided against it. I need to send MMS messages, and have a proper camera, etc. So I'm angling towards the Samsung Omnia i900.

In the mean time I'm stuck with a Sony Ericsson W890i, which is giving me endless hassles. Really endless. I need a new phone, and I need one today. Or tomorrow, but certainly before Wednesday!

Vodacom still doesn't have the Omnia, but MTN does. And it is free on a number of their packages. What's more, I might even be able to find stock!

Since I need the phone, and I'm at the end of my Vodacom contract, I've been wondering about moving to MTN. I don't even care about my number, though portability would be nice.

My question is this: As a Vodacom subscriber, what will I miss if I move to MTN? I've noticed that MTN doesn't use per second billing, but that I get 250 more minutes for slightly less money that I currently pay on Vodacom. I use q fair amount of 3G data - what is MTN's coverage like? How often are calls dropped, etc?

Any help will be appreciated at this point!

Firstly iTalk are about to be bought by MTN so you will end up with them anyway.

Second all the Anytime packages are per second billing.

You can also top up the anytime package to get it to the R800 mark.

Ja.

But that is an additional option (not sure if it costs extra)...

Seems MTN has Vodacom by the b@lls...

MTN, here I come....

Thanks for the replies everybody.

I went to the MTN shop in Clearwater Mall (Roodepoort) this afternoon, and subscribed to a 24-month contract. I'm picking up my Omnia tomorrow during the day!

I moved from Vodacom Talk240 to MTN Anytime 500. Almost the same, but I expect I'll pay less. I use to have a Nokia N91, but now on Samsung i900 Omnia. GREAT! I moved for 2 reasons - bad service and bad service!

Vodacom didn't want to help me get the Omnia or the F480 on their contracts, keep telling me I have to wait, they out of stock. I waited 2 months and now they expect me to pay R2000 extra on my Talk 240 to get the Omnia or still wait to get the F480 free with no ETA, no way, they loss me there!

Thank you MTN

Sad thing is that we are probably a handful of people compared to the vodacom contract customer base - they probably dont even feel it and couldn't care less about the loyal customers leaving them...they're selling iPhones like crazy to ill informed hyped up customers who are in the far greater majority than those who for instance realise we are being ripped of and moving to MTN for better tariff plans and phones like the Omnia i900 and N82...
sigh
