How does this work, is it like a R500 credit on your account, or like your on prepaid, and you can check your balance and have to buy prepaids if you reach 0 ?

its a little confusing.

You basically get x rand credit (e.g. R500 on Anytime 500) every month. Once you've used up all the credit you can still make calls without recharging, but you are billed according to the out-of-bundle rate specified by your price plan. You can check your balance using the *162# USSD command.

The phone options on topup are not worth the money, to put it mildly. Remember that all your unused credit is rolled over up to a maximum of 5 months' worth, IIRC. How much do you use your phone, btw? Any phone in particular that you are interested in?
