Hi guys,
Can someone pls help me out.Got the MTN B970 modem a month ago, works fine..but it just seems to guzzle data time!In less than a month i`ve gone thru 2GB (By the way i`m on prepaid)!!My question is,is this the norm? Cos my cousin, who is on some Vodacom (500MB) package says he never uses up the whole thing.
By the way,i DON`T watch videos, play games online etc..all i do is check my mails, read a couple of blogs etc, nothing hectic.

Is your WiFi on and have you secured it? You might find that a "friendly" neighbour is sharing your connection with you.

No,the WiFi isn`t on,i connect using the USB connection/port.

In that case I would suggest using MDMA rather than VMC so you can track usage otherwise get the free version of NetLimiter which will track usage by application on your machine.

Ok, now am way in over my head! You mind explaining what "MDMA" and "VMC" is?
Cheers!

oh wait, you are using the MTN branded version (sorry too much time in the VC forum). VMC stands for Vodafone Mobile Connect.

I assume if you are attaching it via USB then you are using the MTN Fastlink application to connect? MDMA is an alternative application you can use to connect to the internet, but offers a nice data counter page so you can see how much data you have used. If you look at the top posts in this forum you will see a stick thread called MDMA, download the app and follow the instructions. You need to make sure you exit MTN Fastlink before you start up MDMA. I would also recommend you check out NetLimiter it's a handy tool for tracking traffic by application.

Yeah,i use the MTN fastlink application to connect. I`ll try the MDMA when i get back home.
But on the other hand, what this would tell me is how much data i`m using/i`ve used, but it won`t explain why (i`ve used that much!),would it?
Cos my problem is,it just seems to devour data!

NetLimiter will help you with that.

Hi guys,

Hehehe... thats my problem too , I put one up at the office, as faster alternative to the leased line (still no ADSL available)... put it on the network via the lan port, and put 3 users on to test it (the 3 using the B970 as gateway, everybody else using the leased line still).... I was checking the usage every day, coz I know, it can go really fast, and zip through the data bundle if I'm not careful... we've used less than 500Mb for more than a month, then all of a sudden I checked it (didnt check for two days :-( ) I noticed it disconnected and reconnected (the usage log on it was reset)...
When I checked the balance to listen how much megs still left.... "Zero"... checked account balance : >R5000  thats about 5gigs!
So in the 2 days I didnt check it, IT (somebody of the 3 users) moved a crapload of data....
Still dont understand it (believe it :) ) these are 'low volume users"....
Have to wait and see the itemised bill, to see wtf happened

I was also thinking of rather using the modem with a PC and MDMA (rather than standalone)... but MDMA only logs usage when u disconnect the call... and this one, on the network doesnt generally disconnect from MTN.
Since MTN is unable (unwilling) to put a cap on the account, the only way to avoid such nasty surprises is to go prepaid.
At least Vodacom sends sms to indicate when data bundle is fin, ... not sure if VC tracks usage in real time, or also only log the new session's usage when disconnect?
