Lost my contract sim card in January 2010.. Thought OK this should be easy, bought a sim card hoping to make a swap, called 173, only to find out that I can't because there are these contract only 'special' sim cards, have to buy it at my nearest branch and proccess the swap. Go there the following day (02/02/2010), "Sorry sir we don't have the sim cards in stock, they will be arriving next week.". Next week (08/02/2010) they have none in stock. Next week (19/02/2010) they haven't got them yet, should receive them next week. Today I go: "Sorry sir, but we are now told they will arrive by the month end."
Which effectively is next month.
Possibly there could be some extensions too.

Oh my word. What's up with this branch? I live in King William's Town by the way. All my previous airtime will expire.

I call BS on that excuse they gave you. If you can go from pre-paid to contract, i am sure they can sim swap to a pre-paid sim. I doubt there is much difference in the sim cards.

Its a money making scheme the networks have.A prepaid sim card will cost you a few buck. When doing a sim swap they going to charge you about a hundred rand for the new sim card.

Had a similar experience with Vodacom once upon a time. Damn networks, always out to make a killing.

I would call that a breach of contract. You pay for the services connected to your sim card. If they are unable to supply you with a sim replacement after 3 weeks which is unheard of in the cellular industry then tell them to cancel you contract or you want a credit for one months subscription. Dont take know for an answer. If all else fails then go to the local newspaper
