Using a K700i (GPRS class 10: 4+1/3+2) at 22:45, connecting to the "FAERIE GLEN" tower:

"Line speed" is usually 40-50kbps during the day.
 
Just for comparison, I used my old T68i (GPRS class 4: 3+1) at 22:58, also connecting to the "FAERIE GLEN" tower:

I suspect the lower speed is a combination of both the number of slots and the coding scheme which the T68i supports (or the network was just a little busier).
 
Life is not fair is it.
Im using the Novatel 3G card, and just added the external antenna.
Download time: 62.609 seconds
Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
Estimated line speed: 65.2 (kilobits/second)
Estimated line speed: 8 (kiloBytes/second)

I will perform similar tests using Nokia 9300 and the SE T630, and post them
 
this time the U630 ran in UMTS mode (blue led) and here are the results
Download time: 51.297 seconds
Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
Estimated line speed: 79.5 (kilobits/second)
Estimated line speed: 9.7 (kiloBytes/second)
 
This is MTN GPRS in the East of Pretoria today.

Ping statistics for 196.11.240.60:
Packets: Sent = 900, Received = 598, Lost = 302 (33% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 309ms, Maximum = 4358ms, Average = 1163ms

The high packet loss makes this connection unusable - never mind the whole 3kbps I could get from time to time.

I can't run the Telkom test as it just times out :(
 
EDGE test

Hi

I would like to have a good idea on the speed I can get via my Edge connection, I am talking about the real bandwidth I am getting from the radio.

bcse if I get connect on the internet APN, i have also to take into account the internet speed.

Valid point, I get 166 kbps on the Telkom local http speed test, also on a file download from SAIX I get about 20 kBytes/sec so also around 160 kbps. But when I start for example 4 different file downloads simultaneously, I get 1 MB down in 35 secs, which equates to about 230 kbps.

Wow. It cant be cached either, since its the first run on a brand new device.
 
You should try repeat the test 2 or 3 more times, look at the results to see if they are consistant

Tried it again now, similar speeds (50-80kB/s). It might be because today is saturday. I'll try it again on monday.

Use a stopwatch and count the bytes coming in. Also, try a few file downloads simultaneously and use a stopwatch.

Alright, I used to a stopwatch to verify it, and GPRS bandwidth monitor to make sure the data was transferred. Also did it on a weekday night since it might have been the weekend causing it.

The site reported 55.5 kB/s (450.9 kbps) and 9 seconds. My stopwatch said it took 11 seconds, but that may because I was using a mobile browser which is fairly slow. (Opera mobile beta on phone, nice browser). GPRS monitor showed that I had downloaded the 500kb, too. I tried a test on gam.co.za, and that gave 265kbps. This isnt too strange, since my 512 ADSL line gives 374.4 kbps on gam's test and 508 kbps on telkoms test. Either way.. fast. :cool:

EDIT: Did not try multiple files.. at R1/mb to R2/mb it could easily cost over R10 to do a simple multiple file test. :(

The stopwatch is more accurate. 3G can not give speeds as fast as that site reports. 11 seconds for 500 kB is 45.45 kB/sec or 363.4 kbps.

For the file downloads, just start them all at the same time and stop them after about 500 kB. Just make sure you stop ALL of them. You don't wanna get up to go answer the phone and come back half an hour later... :eek:
