What is the penalty if I wanted to cancel a contract at MTN
My wife and I agree that she should go prepaid as her phonebill reaches R1200 per month
got 7 months left on the contract

im not too sure but i think it is three things
1> the remainder of the seven months
2>the handset cost
3>the cancellation penalty

EDIT: it is in your contract, just read through the last page (i think)

I don't know if they have changed their rules yet but last year July I went to change my contract from MyCall 100 to Anytime 50. I was told by the MTN shop assistant that my contract expiry date was the next day (about 8 hours away) and that if I changed the contract it would cost me R1000 in penalties. But 8 hours later there wouldn't be any penalties....

Realy is crazy,i also wanted to take both my contracts to pay as you go(as i spend close to R3000 a month on them).
I had about 8 Months left, was also told to retrun handsets and pay 8 months in advance.Asking what about the minutes i get i was told i will loose them!!
Kept the contracts as i now only have about 5 months left, then will go pay as you go.
Realy sucks as i have been with MTN since cellphones became available in SA.
Thats customer service for you,the same as about everything we get in SA.

in there defense, they do tell you about it before you sign and they make you sign twice to say that you were explained the cost and procedure, but it really is crazy

In most cases the termination fee ends up being more than the phone would cost brand new. Its just to scare you from changing, and countries like the UK and US are now looking into imposing laws about them to make them fair for consumers.

Yes, you do sign it, that doesnt make it a fair contract. You couldnt give someone else the right to own you, for instance. In this case, the charge is purportedly to cover the cost of the handset, but its so inflated it obviously has nothing to do with the cost of the handset and everything to do with preventing you from switching.

I understand asking a penalty fee,but asking to be paid for airtime that you wont be using is nothing short of CRIMINAL!!!

Assuming your wife is on a mid level package with a flashy handset, you could be looking at 4-7k. At least (if your number port is approved) you'll be able to keep the same number even while the contract is still running.

Can't you rather just limit her account? I'm not sure if MTN supports it, but with Vodac I simply called and asked them to limit my account to Rxxx. Strangely enough, since asking for the cap I've yet to reach it to see what exactly will happen when I do.

Thats in the contract & thats why it is called a contract. It is wrong, I agree BUT, you should not sign something you not happy with.
