the local MTN shop confirms my contract expired on 5 january and i must phone 808 to cancel. i've been holding on for the cancellations department for 25 minutes from work.

is there another way of cancelling, alternatively will MTN simply stop debiting my account this month.

is there an MTN rep here who can assist pse?

No, you have to phone unfortunately.

You will also loose all your airtime immediately but will still have to pay the full bill at the end of this month.

thank you phoneJunky, you are absolutely correct. i eventually got through to a helpful lady named Freda who cancelled for me. My +R500 airtime's already disappeared.

as a sidenote this is why i cancelled my contract

1. if my phone gives trouble none of the service providers is interested
2. if there's no signal you're stuck with them
3. it takes upwards of 30 minutes to get through to any "customer service" (sic) numbers

i'll stay with MTN because i get the best signal from them at the moment but will enjoy the freedom to port if i so wish.

Remember your phone's warranty is not supported by your service provider but by the manufacturer, take it to their service centre if possible.

I was in a similar situation but worried long before the time, so I ran around trying to find alternatives.

Officially, I think once the contract runs out, they keep debiting you on a monthly basis (one month at a time) until you cancel. But you MUST cancel within a week of expiry (which would be today).

808 is a dead end a lot of the time, but I was fortunate to get through and do my cancellation last Monday morning - and everything worked out fine after that. In case you can't get through to that number, try 809, or 1761 (and ask for cancellation / retentions department).

If that fails, you can go into an MTN Service Centre and ask them to cancel the renewal / monthly debit order. Take your ID book and, just in case, a proof of address document. But you must go to a "Service Centre" - the MTN stores usually in big malls (in Cape Town, Cavendish, Canal Walk, Waterfront, N1 City)...NOT a franchise branch (which are a lot more common).

In all cases, make sure that if you want to stay on prepaid, TELL THEM! You don't want to lose your MTN number over a silly ommission.

Hope it works out for you :)

Didn't spot that you had it sorted. Anyway, hope that info is useful for anyone else that ends up in this situation. It can be a real nightmare trying to end a contract :(
