I noticed this issue with my mother too and was forced to port her out to Telkom to solve the issue.

It seems these WASPs send a sms that contains a short url. Now most android smartphones that I know of resolve those short urls to add a header of some sort and that causes the person that received the SMS to "double" opt in.

To solve these issues you need to revoke internet access on the messaging app in the application permission settings. After doing that I noticed that there was no more auto content subscriptions added even after receiving a sms advertising the said service.

I was in the WASP industry for 7 years. It seems nothing has changed since I left the industry four years ago. This is why all my contracts are topup (vodacom).

I'm also on Vodacom Top Up, and I can't leave more than R5 airtime in my account otherwise it gets stolen. I use the account mainly for data, and incoming voice / sms.

TopUp data contracts all the way for us. Slap on R50 once every three months, usually just before I need to make a phonecall because the rest disappeared.

Yip, that's the way. Can't make Vodacom calls or sms's.

That's why I can only use dual sim phones. If someone gives me a iPhone X for free, I will sell it.

MTN is lying about click jacking.
My wife was subscribe while she was asleep.
MTN could eliminate this completely as other have said with a double confirmation similar to the banks confirming with ussd.
MTN is committing fraud. They are adding subscriptions to your account without your consent. It is not a contract between the subscriber and the wasp. The message clearly says it's an MTN play subscription and MTN charges you and pays the wasp.
As MTN makes large amounts of money from this they don't care to solve the issues.
This is illegal under the new consumer protection act and MTN must be fined and refund all money taken.
Even if this is click jacking MTN known who the culprits are bad on complaints to them and on helloPeter but they don't blacklist the wasps.
The fault lies solely with MTN. They are committing the fraud.

What needs to happen is that MTN needs to do this to a millionaire or billionaire who wants to prove a point. They will then sue MTN. Because I very much doubt MTN's excuses will hold up in court. Unfortunately we need somebody with the money to prove that.

I'm waiting for the day somebody with deep enough pockets purposefully auto subscribes to a bunch of these for years and then takes MTN to court for millions as it is clearly illegal to subscribe people without explicit consent.
