On dual-SIM phones supplied by MTN on contract, their firmware prevents the use of the second SIM slot. I was never told this until I attempted to use the second SIM (ironically, with a new MTN contract SIM).

I have two questions:

- Technically, is there ANY way that I can overcome this limitation? I have been hearing conflicting things about updating firmware (the devices I need ths for are Huawei P8 Lites).

- Legally speaking, is there anything in either consumer protection legislation or competition legislation that would render this restriction unlawful.

I would appreciate a response to either question from anyone who knows.

You can get a P8 lite to be dual sim if network locked to one sim. Many tutorials on the net. I have a Vodacom contract p9 lite that I did this with.

Not sure that it was advertised as such, but it has the two slots, and I knew that the particular model was dual-sim.

How safe is the process?

An MTN tech person said that the Huawei store opening soon in Durban would be able to do it, but when I phoned Huawei, they denied this.

There is a risk. But if you follow the instructions to the letter, the chances of bricking your phone are minimal.
