I am a novice to Broadband so perhaps someone can assist.
I use a Nokia 9300 (Edge enabled) with my onboard bluetooth Dell laptop.

MTN tell me the connection speed should be around 236kbs. I tested it on 3 internet speed testing sites and the fastest I got was 88kbs.

Can there be such a disparity in actual vs claimed speeds or have I done something wrong?

Thks

It all depends if you are in an EDGE area, what is the signal like ? Then it also depends on how many timeslots are allocated to you when you connect and this is resource dependent.

Edge/gprs

Do you know if you are in an EDGE area? That 88 sounds like GPRS speeds
How do I know if I am in and Edge area?
I am in Cape Town CBD and also Durbanville area mostly

The cell id should say "Y'ello Broadband". Even then, you wouldn't know if your phone switches to a non-EDGE tower during your connection.

I have found the Telkom test gives lower speeds compared to e.g. downloading a couple of files at the same time. Try that and use a stopwatch or bandwidth monitor to check your speed.

I went to a demo of the EDGE technology today using a PCMCIA EDGE modem. Yes it works and is truly portable. It did not seem as fast as the advertised speed though but this could be due to many factors.

I saw coverage maps of EDGE enabled towers and it's huge.

I was told by a Tech at a Vodacare Shop that if ure running in EDGE mode ure phone shows a E instead of a G in the top left corner. Don't know if it is true my phone has always just shown a G and it does say "Y'ELLO BROADBBAND" on my Nokia 6230.

Just check that.

Tech at Vodacare must be on E , u always have a G displayed , with 3G u have 3G icon displayed

The Vodashops should train there people or employ people that know what they are doing, some times i just like to pop into a shop and ask the staff a technical question just to see what funny answer i get.....

ok that is handset depedant cos i have actually seen a samsung display E when in coverage,.....def not on nokias tho......."to E or not to E thats the question?"

I posted a new message concerning my EDGE speed in comparison to 3G... A few minutes later I found this thread... sorry for the duplication
