Gromitt, if you send a pm to the MTN Data Dude, I'm sure he will help you.
There are a few possible pitfalls when you want to use EDGE, specifically when only SOME of the towers in your area are EDGE enabled. The GSM device will always select the strongest signal (tower) which may or may not be EDGE enabled. So unless the EDGE tower near you is a lot stronger than the adjacent towers in your area, you will not be guaranteed that you will have EDGE all of the time. You would want to ensure that your device ONLY uses the EDGE tower. But I am not aware of any routers/data cards that can lock onto specific towers. There are some handsets that can do this though.
If you REALLY want to do-it-yourself, see if you can get your hands on a Nokia 6630/6680. If you install the netmonitor (ftd menu) on this phone, inside this menu there is a specific display for EDGE capability. It will show you if a tower is EDGE enabled or not. But what it won't show you is the coding scheme supported by the tower, i.e. how FAST edge on the tower can perform. This is where I think MTN DD would be able to give you accurate info. The above handsets (there are a few other older models too) can also lock the phone onto a specific user selectable tower using the ftd menu.
