MTN fibre

Didn't MTN announce a while ago they were making their FTTH network open access?

Yeah - I am confused as well. I have not seen any ISP's offering services over MTN though and must agree that this will only be finalised next year. They will definately not be competitive in comparison with other deals out there.

Hi guys

I found out today that MTN is laying Fibre in and around my area ( started a few weeks back digging trenches ). The lady I spoke too that is a supervisor of some sort looking over the guys digging the trenches said that, they are only laying the pipes for now and another sub contracting company would then come out after they are finished to fit the Fibre cables.

I forgot to ask her how long this process takes, can anyone share some insight on that?
Also if it is MTN's infrastructure am I now bound using MTN as my ISP? Because they are quite expensive compared to other ISP's!

Lastly, how is their network quality and reliability?

I wouldn't sign any contract with MTN. They are expensive with nothing to show for it like the open access guys like Vumatel. Data bundles shouldn't even be a word any more. If you want fibre in your area rather start a public participation process that a company like Vumatel would likely win or get 300 people on board for 123Net.

The thing is I don't think there is mych of a demand for fibre in my area, so i doubt I'll get that many people to help out.

Guess I'm stuck with MTN.

Yes. I stopped and asked the woman in the maintenance vehicle just up the road and she said that MTN is contracting them to dig up the trenches and lay the empty cables then a second company will come out and lay the actual fibre optic in those cables.

Not sure exactly where you're located but Uitenhage has 26,000 households in a relatively small area. Fibre providers are no longer picking just single areas so should be possible to get it covered as a whole.

I don't think contractors know much. Fibre could be for anything.

My work is also connected to fibre, but i think thats from telkom. Because a telkom tech was sitting in our parts store fiddling with a big router like device for a couple of days ( but that was a few months ago ).

Not to be nasty but if it was my money to invest I would only lay fibre in the industrial area to pick up VW, Goodyear and all the other component producers and then possibly Vanes and Winterhoek.

(and the industrial area already has plenty of fibre and MSANs).

Yeah probably. She did also mention that they did the same work is P.E aswell. I don't know which areas though.
