Is it possible to buy an MTN sim card for fixed LTE and only use prepaid data instead of using the bundles from Afrihost or Supersonic?
The main reason is that out Telkom LTE has been unusable the last 21 days where we only receive speed around 1-3 Mbps. So I am hoping to try and test an MTN prepaid sim to see how the speeds will be in our area.

I am considering getting Afrihost MTN Fixed LTE next month and thought I'd test the MTN network first. Currently with Rain and Telkom. Bought a normal MTN sim card and prepaid data tested using a Huawei B618 router on the normal MTN network. Managed to get up to 99.4Mbps (compare this to Rain 3-4Mbps and Telkom 6-8Mbps). Hoping that Afrihost MTN Fixed LTE will be similar to the normal prepaid speeds I am getting. I'll even be happy if i can get 20Mbps with MTN Fixed LTE. If for some reason it doesn't then I will cancel before the end of the month or the next.

How much did you pay for the prepaid data?

Gosh, can't remember but it was cheap, cheap. Bought it at one of those PepCell stores but you can buy it anywhere. Just need id and proof of address. Also bought 600Meg data for about R99 for running speed tests and some movie streaming. Tested the sim in both a Huawei B525 and B618 router. Got much better results with the B618 though. Almost double the speed.

Cable break. Everyone on Telkom Mobile is affected. They haven't fixed it yet.

We had these problems before the cable break. Started on the 1st of Jan.

A speedtest just now to Vodacom

This is my current Telkom LTE speed vs MTN LTE prepaid sim speed

Telkom is with a B315 and MTN is with a B525 currently. Hoping to get a B618 soon though. Had done previous test with a B618 which I borrowed from someone.

Just remember if u use MBB speedtest its zero rated on MTN....don't need data.

I switched from Rain Fixed LTE to the Afrihost/MTN Fixed Pure LTE and the overall performance has been much better than Rain FLTE (up until the cable beaks!)!

I normally get download speeds of close to 40Mbps and upload speeds of around 10Mbps. I can usually stream at any time of the day without the buffering problems that I regularly encountered on my Rain service. In my case it has been a big improvement over my Rain service as well as the Telkom prepaid bundles which I sometimes use.

One of the few benefits of the Rain packages is the extended offpeak data times which allowed me to use my data more efficiently but the Pure LTE service works out cheaper and faster than Rain FLTE on the smaller packages so I think most customers would consider the Pure LTE service to be an improvement over the Rain Fixed LTE service. Some of the large Rain FLTE packages are more cost effective than the Pure LTE service so you need to compare the packages carefully.

You are better off with the B525 depending on the model of the B618.

Is there a specific reason why the B525 will be better with the MTN compared to the B618 22d/65d? (I dont know much about the routers)
