Hi Guys

The residential estate where I am renting are busy installing MTN FTTH. I tried searching the forum to see if anyone has any opinion on their service, but really didn't come up with much. One interesting article I found stated that MTN are using an open access model for their FTTH roll-out. So this should mean that while I rent the line from MTN, I should be able to buy data bundles from whichever ISP I choose? Can anyone confirm this?

Any comments from anyone who is using this service would be welcome. I'm finding it very difficult to get answers on shaping for streaming media etc if purchasing the data from MTN direct.

the MTN FTTH is not open access, so you have to take the data from them. i feel they are very expensive.

They are expensive I agree. There was an article posted on MyBB from MTN stating they will be open access. I'll post a link when I'm at my PC again. Exactly the type of stuff I want to confirm. Currently I use about 300GB a month for streaming and with MTN with a 20Mbps connection it's going to cost me more than R1500 a month. Nuts.

Neither MTN nor Vodacom are open-access. I looked at both proposals for estates over 200 houses and they are not viable options (and their contracts pretty much lock your estate into exclusivity with them). In our estate I vetoed the installation of non-open-access FTTH as I felt that this will limit choice in future and will have a negative effect on resale value of my property. Now the HOA is going back to the drawing board.

Unfortunately most estates will rush and commit to the MTNs/Vodacom's as those providers can offer backhaul very quickly (off their towers) - but within 12 months this picture will turn dramatically and non-open-access FTTH estates will be sitting with a 24-48 month contract and no exit-clause.

That's crazy!!! With Vumatel as a fibre provider as an example, you can get a 100/100 for 500GB for that price range. A lot of complexes are really shooting themselves in the foot by using MTN/Vodacom.

Agreed. Rather wait and plan fibre deployment properly than being stuck with an expensive provider. Especially considering that in certain cases, some providers are less keen on deploying in areas already with fibre.

Agree with all comments above, unfortunately as I am a tenant I don't have much choice. There is no Telkom infrastructure here so I was using Bitco (Awesome SP in my opinion, connection was rock solid), but have now been asked to move over to the new approved SP for the estate. R1539 to be exact for 300GB and 20Mbps. I guess I can just hope that MTN bring their data bundle prices down :D

Also have MTN FTTH sitting in a small manhole outside my house and available for order but not making any moves until price drop / open access announcement.
Would rather just stick to 20Mbps ADSL until then.
