How good is MTN's insurance. If my phone gets stolen or badly damaged to the extent that it can not be repaired, how long does it take MTN to replace the phone.
My phone is insured by them for R7000, in the unlikely hood of me needing to claim will they replace the phone with little hassle.

you have to weigh it all up in terms of what it is.
Its going to be more expensive than adding it to an existing household policy. Its also going to give worse service.
The only plus to it is that if you need to claim then it doesnt effect your household no claim bonus.

If it's damaged beyond repair (in your honest opinion), report it stolen/lost and claim a new one. Will need to open case etc at police station, but that's probably quicker than waiting for MTN to decide it's stuffed.

If it could be fixed, take your chances with MTN. Keeping battery/memory card and claiming loss seems like the best option.

Is MTN that much cheaper than specifying the thing on your household insurance? It's MTN- they have to be MUCH cheaper to be worthwhile...

I found it was actually cheaper to insure my phone with SANTAM.

Insurance from the providers is a rip-off. I insured by phone with Auto and General stand alone and it only costs R75 for R7000 cover, I've since taken out a household policy and added my phone to it and now I only pay R40 for R7000 cover. What are you paying on MTN? R160+?

If you add the phone to your insurance as removable household goods you will pay less, I claimed a while ago got payed out with 0 hassles. And I told them It got washed in my pants pocket. This was with dial direct.
I Think I pay the same to insure a laptop and 2 high end Android phones as I did for my 1 phone with MTN.

Interesting ... when called SANTAM they wanted to charge more than MTN, even when included in my household content. Also, MTN covers water damage, but I don't think the other insurers do!!

Did you tell them how much you want to insure the phone for? And was the amount spot-on as to what the phone's replacement value would be?

My iPhone worked out R28 per month cheaper with SANTAM than with Vodacom insurance. That was a R672 saving over two years.

They do cover just phones but stand alone policies are more expensive, like in my case my stand alone cell phone policy with Auto and General was R75 but when added to household insurance it was only an extra R35. If you have car insurance you could also add it on there.

If I'm not mistaken, you need to keep the MTN simcard in (or must be the main sim used in phone) to be covered (?). That might have changed.
