MTN iPhone 4 locked to SP?

Can anyone tell me if the iPhone 4 that you can get on the MTN contract is locked to MTN? Can the phone be used with let's say a vodacom sim card?
 
I am using an iPhone 4 that was taken out on an MTN contract with a Vodacom micro -sim, so I can confrim that it works
 
This is excellent news! Thanks yarik11 for confirming this. By micro-sim you mean the normal sim card?
 
Apparently I have been hiding in a cave. Was not aware of the micro sim. Does this mean that the iPhone 4 only works with this microsim? Here is my brain scheme... will it work:

My vodacom contract (iPhone 3G on iPhone Talk 120s) is only up for renewal end Jan 2011. And I just cant wait that long. Soooo my mother in law (whose MTN contract I pay for) is up for renewal and I was thinking of upgrading her to the iPhone 4, I take the phone and then use it with my current vodacom contract and when the time come for me to upgrade I will downgrade my contract and just get a my meg 600 once off bundle for data usage on the iPhone. Now that you talk about this micro sim, would it mean that the upgraded MTN contract will come with this new microsim and my big scheme blows in my face???

As far as I know there is nothing compelling you to get the MTN microsim, they just expect you to do that, but don't think it is compulsory. I could be wrong. If you take the phone from her you can just get your Vodacom SIM swopped to a microsim and then you will be sorted out. Another Vodacom option is TwinSIM I think it is which is 2 SIMs on the same contract/no. but only 1 can be on the network at once, but that is only really needed if you plan to use your SIM in a micro and non microsim device. Hope this helps.
 
Ok, then let me ask this... so she would not be obliged to take a new microsim for the iPhone. So that she can still use her old sim with the old phone.

I would say do the upgrade on MTN, get yourself a Vodacom micro-sim and use it.

And if they prompt you to get an MTN micro-sim, just tell them that you don't need one and let your mother-in-law use her old handset with her old sim. I don't think that they can force you to take out a micro-sim. But even if they do, you can use this micro-sim adaptor to turn a micro-sim into a regular sim. It only costs R55. But like I said, I don't think that things will go that far.
 
Cool no problem. Yeah should be fine and doubt they will force you to take the microsim, do post back and let us know that all got sorted out (more just for interest sake than much more)
 
@Yarik11 - Where did you get your simswap done for R63? I'm been told it will cost me anything from R135 - R209.

edit: just realized that yours was with vodacom. MTN seems to be ripping me off for the microsim swap.

Yup, I did mine in Vodashop at Kilarney Mall, which is close to my work. But before doing that I also called the Vodashop in Centurion (which is where I live) and they quoted me the exact same price.
 
When i upgraded my contract, i got the micro-sim and sim swap for free...

Thanks Vodacom for Quicksim.....

Cool - I am getting my iPhone4 on Saturday and good to know about the freebies as I have Quicksim too, they better not try charge me, I am going to be getting a higher contract too so even more reason not to charge me.
 
So will the opposite also work? An Iphone taken out on a vodacom contract, with an MTN sim card?

Bottom line is that an iPhone bought in SA (MTN or Vodacom) will work with any network operator that uses the same GSM spec. So; yes a MTN SIM will definitely work in a "Vodacom iPhone".

Managed to get the MicroSIM for free and all up and running, just had to pay the R150 admin fee for contract renewal, I gather you have no choice to pay this no matter what you do (unless maybe you are on a super high package)

If you upgrade through Voda Direct you pay no fees if I'm correct...
