MTN is stealing my megabytes

I was really excited when I bought my MTN modem for R75 on the Top Up Contract. The first thing I did was buy a 1 gig bundle because of the fact that my girlfriend had a Vodacom modem and felt that amount would be sufficient. Occasionally she and I wouldn't even finish it in a month.

I was wrong. MTN has serious problems when calculating the megabytes. It's come to a point, where I know I'm being ripped off and don't even want to use my internet bundle in fear of being ripped off yet again.

A simple experiment done by my girlfriend and I was this: I connected to four websites using my modem, and she connected to the same four websites with her Vodacom modem on the same computer.

For my six minute session, I ended up using 6.29 megabytes.
My girlfriend used for a six minute session: 0.39 megabytes.

If I just connect to the internet with my MTN modem, they bill me two megabytes just for connecting. This is not even with opening any web page or any applications running.

For some reason this usage is constantly increasing, even when just left alone, whereas my girlfriends connection doesn't even use anything up. We left it on to see if she got charged for connecting and I think it used something like 0.01 megabyte.

I've called MTN (155) three times and no one can help me, they haven't even returned to one of my phone calls, even though I've been promised a reply every time I called them.

If MTN cannot sort this problem out as soon as possible, I'll be very upset. Adding to this, does anyone know how I can convert my MTN E270 Modem so I can use a Vodacom simcard?

Thanks,
Clayton

regarding your test of 4 websites on her pc and yours, those websites maybe be cached on her machine, you could be using different browsers, you could have used the same amount of data as her, but in addition to opening those pages, your computer may be downloading software updates (windows, Antivirus) etc.

I suggest you first check that your pc is not downloading these updates first, as this is most likely the problem you are experiencing.

I have done all the above. I checked my cache, i checked for any files updating, i searched for adware and spyware. I phoned MTN at 173 and 1555, they can never help me, the just take my number down and promise they will see to the matter, i have not received 1 call. Just coming to this site used up 13 megabytes in a space of 5 minutes and have absolutely nothing updating.
I don't know what to do

are you saying that you getting 2mb per minute...? try and make a standard dialup connection thru windows not thru the MTN software. then watch the connection.
