So I managed to snap a pic after the guys did the lte setup. Looks like they had to add a complete new section... They were not there a couple of days ago and when they finished on the site I started getting LTE on my phone at home.

So I took a drive with a vodacom simcard and although I got a sms saying LTE is activated I could not pick up LTE anywhere in Richards bay.

As per the Vodacom coverage map there is no LTE available in Richards Bay at the moment.

Yeah but even MTN coverage map shows no coverage at all in Richards Bay but if I had to guesstimate Richards bay is about 60-70% covered by MTN LTE so I assumed that these coverage maps is not very accurate or very outdated.

Bingo! I've stated this a while ago already but once you show interest, you'll get a response like this:

Hi Wirelesswarrior

We would like to be of assistance with regards to your posts, but, are unable to as you fall outside our LTE coverage map.

We have also been advised to request that you not activate LTE and/or cancel if you have as we cannot support you from a network perspective.

We are happy to assist you with any further issues in future.

Regards
Telkom Mobile

Okay maybe not since MTN might have a different attitude.

Regarding the LTE SIM cards, I think they are a farce. Too many conflicting stories out there. First it was 128K SIMs only, now it's 64K as well. Yet old SIM cards work...this ought to be reported to a consumer protection body because I've paid for SIM swaps from MTN and could have probably just used my old nano SIMs.

Even the old original style SIMs from Telkom Mobile work with LTE yet they push a "Bluefish" SIM for LTE...and it's not needed (at least I didn't pay for it unlike with MTN).
