Mrs Dragon just came to me, she has been having problems with her V360 on MTN... it has been on and off for a few months now, and she is getting ticked off with it... so she asked me to look at it again, it battles to use Opera-mini and when I run it on GPRS / EDGE it is very slow, much like the other person I know down the road that is running on Vodacom

Seems to me that phones and networks have their problems from time to time

anyway my Virgin service at the moment is running way faster than both of them

Had a chat to Mrs Dragon... and she is ticked off with MTN - When she first got the phone (last year) and was setting up WAP she noticed her money was being gobbled up every time she launched the browser

To cut a long story short, you do not get this problem when you use Virgin... it seems to me that MTN every so often seem to have a problem with running Opera Mini and then the users try the default browser, which gets them no where, other than gobbling up money. If I did not know better I would say this is a money making racket

Anyway it is Mrs Dragon birthday on Sunday and one of the things I am going to get her is a Virgin Starter pack so she can port from MTN to Virgin. Will let people know how things go

AAMOFF (As A Matter Of Fact) - I am a hardware tech person, with network experience going back before Beltel days, working on IBM systems with err 301 / 501 - and let us not forget err 1701 (Enterprise) - Hard Drives

So before anyone pipes up about CellC turning a profit, you might want to note that Telkom have yet to pay off the money they borrowed over ten years ago to set themselves up... last I heard they were down to 36%, but now they want to lash out on multi media

It sound's like Mrs Dragon is using CSD (dial-up) and not GPRS. Just get the correct GPRS settings for Mrs Dragon's phone. Then she shouldn't have that "money gobbling" problem anymore.

it does this when just using the phone. not connected to the PC - just click more games... two bucks gone... press the browser pop goes another two Rand - only another 14 Rand to go and bye bye MTN

You don't have to be connected to a PC to use CSD. You just need to start a data connection on your phone. Let me know which phone Mrs Dragon has and I'll try to help you disable CSD on her phone.

(By the way: I don't work for MTN or any of the other networks for that matter. I just do tech support for a company which provides services using GPRS. The problem which Mrs Dragon is experiencing is quite common)

we both have Motorola V360 - I do not have the gobbling problem (on Virginmobile) - also she is ticked off with MTM being off line and she uses it for the net (opera mini) so paying 50c instead of R2 - if their is a reason for the gobbling we would be keen to know - I thought it was something like a minimum (rip off) charge

This problem is very common on Motorola phones. It seems Motorolas are of the few phones which try to make a CSD connection automatically when they can't make a GPRS connection. To prevent the phone from using CSD again, you need to remove the CSD phone numbers from the phone's current default internet profile. I'll PM you more detailed instructions.

Hi Athlon64, i'm using the Motorola SLVR L7 gprs phone. Please PM me how to remove the CSD phone numbers. :)
Thx in advance. :)

I've used MTN in the past. They did not have blasting speeds, but it was stable and reliable. sky.akash, do you use your VM sim in your E220? I still have to play around with the settings and software sometime with my VM sim in my E220.

yeah mine also gave troubles - i deleted all the csd setting numbers and passwords and stuff - now it's better :p
