Johannesburg - African telecoms giant MTN announced South Africa's first uncapped mobile broadband contracts on Tuesday, following an announcement in April of uncapped one-day data bundles.
Surajh Surjoo, senior manager of consumer segment and broadband at MTN, said that the new uncapped contracts will be on a 24-month basis. Two contracts are available; MTN Uncapped Lite and Pro.
Both packages have a fair usage policy after which the connection is slowed down to 128 kilobits per second, but subscribers will not be cut off.
"It really is all you can eat," says Surjoo. "And there is no shaping on either contract, only speed throttling after the fair usage limit is reached."
Surjoo said that the Lite package has a fair usage policy of 3GB and 10GB for the Pro package.
The Lite package is billed at R749 per month and the Pro at R1999.
Surjoo said that MTN is also piloting the first UMTS 900Mhz 3G connections in SA that offers a stronger signal than conventional 3G technologies.
"We have already launched one-day uncapped broadband passes and these have been met with enthusiasm by the market. This has paved the way for the first uncapped long-term contracts in SA," said Surjoo.
He added that the contracts would be available from June 1 2010.
