Over the last few days MTN has been calling me to renew my contract early and they are offering to write off the balance of the outstanding amount for the current phone I have. The new package will be month to month, then when I want a new phone they will add that to the current contract.,

With MTN I immediately ask what is the catch? Has anyone else been offered a similar deal?

from what I can see, they are offering some insane promo's on renewal due to the financial difficuilties they are in internationally.
pretty much every upgrade includes 30GB of data once off, there are data bundles added to contracts for super cheap.

the catch is you are stuck whit MTN for 2 more years.

they offering like it's something new
Been with them for years - and this is the normal - you new contract start the next month and they write off (handset fees etc ) the remaining 2/3 months of the old one

They're trying to trick people into new contracts by calling it "month to month". They called me and said they'll be changing my expired contract into a "month-to-month". They didn't mention it's a new contract, so I agreed. Only when I got the "welcome to your new contract" SMS did I realise what had happened and now I'm stuck for another two years.

Wonder how many of their contract customers have taken up the offer of a new contract with written off fees on the old contract...

...people must be desperate for a new phone/toy...

No the handset fees get added to your new contract and you end up paying it off. This is how all providers have been doing it for years, ever since they implemented the handset fees.

I was about to cancel with Vodacom. Called retentions and they offered me 1gig data and R110 airtime for R79. I'm happy with that even if I'm locked into 24 months again.

Listen carefully...

If you ignore them your contract will go over to month-by-month terms. Meaning you can give 30days notice when you want. No need to wait out the rest of a contract.

What they are prepared to do is write off the monthly payment of the handset for the next few months (i assume 2-4months).
When you pay new contract amount you would normally pay RXX to finish paying off the handset from the old contract, they are prepared to write that handset cost off if you are prepared to have your balls tightly noosed for the next 24 months.

All maybe except MTN - This has never been done to me on MTN - what i ended up paying is the new Contract no more. the old handset fee falls away and only the new one not an addition of the 2
Of all the crap they do (and their accounts can be a mess) this is the one plus i found with them that they never messed up (touch wood).

On vodacom they continue the old contract till the 24 months and start the new one after.

MTN is a very decent NP, not sure why people hate them so much.

If your signal is poor you cant really say their service is bad, if however if you signal is full and you get dropped calls/slow speed then you can say they have bad speeds.

Thanks for your replies.

Below is quoted from their email, I am going to ask them for a copy of the contract for their month to month packages to check the cancellation policy etc.

Below is the month to month deal I told you about telephonically: 350minutes, 5GB data for R539 and when the IPhone 8 is out then you can call me so you can upgrade to a 24mtnhs contract with a device.

My thoughts are if I can get out of paying them more money than necessary then why not, considering how much we pay each month.

Only Vodacom does this AFAIK. MTN definitely doesn't.

Pretty normal, no catch.
I've been with MTN for years.
You can renew your contract every 20 months. You can upgrade or downgrade your package. They will add a small fee the following month which comes to about R150, cant remember what it was for.
