My contract has come to an end, and I'm looking what to do next.
My company has offered to pay for a portion of my contract (R500 limit), so if I take them up on it I have to stay with MTN or move to Vodacom as they pull the contract onto their accounts.

The package I'm looking at is the MTN Choice 200 (200mins, 100sms, 300MB data) with the Samsung Galaxy S5 (the phone I've decided on) at R609 p/m. I called retentions to see if they would offer me a better deal to stay with MTN instead of leaving. They offered to credit my account with 2 months worth of subscription fees (R1218 of value). Ordinarily, I'd say great and take the offer. But this doesn't really have a benefit to me as work is paying the majority of the subscription anyway. They also can't reduce my monthly subscription by R50 (which would effectively be the same value as what they are offering).

The fellow I spoke to at MTN Retentions said they can't modify offers, only offer credits. Has anyone else had success negotiation a price reduction instead? What did you say to do it?

Taking another possible solution, is it possible to take the credit from my phone SIM account and have it put instead into my data SIM account (which the company isn't paying for)?

Depending on your usage, I'd go with the MTN Choice 100 instead of the 200. This is less than the R500 your company offers you. Personally I'd stay with MTN because of cheap mobile data with Afrihost

My usage will be quite high, probably more than 200 mins (but probably not as much as 350mins).
I'm ok with covering the extra.
Completely agree re: Afrihost data

OP why not go over to Telkom Mobile or another service provider that offers good rates or does your company want you to stay with MTN in order to receive R500 credit per month into your MTN SP account.

Considering some of the issues people have with porting, AH mobile data, and the fact that MTN don't force thier branding into the firmware of phones they sell, I'd definitely stay with MTN.

I would also stay with MTN but I feel that MTN choice contracts are just not as well priced as their Anytime contracts or am I missing something here?

Maybe I'm just mad the deals just don't have that attractiveness like they used to have.

I work at a corporate - they have a relationship with Vodacom and MTN, so that's who I have to choose between

If the company you work for is a big corporate then they might have access to MTNs corporate accounts managers....those guys have more power than the retention dept - and they can def do discounts - of a suitable size to fix your situation.

Can't hand out specific details since I think it varies by company & is confidential...but as I said see if your company has a contact.

You can still get the Anytime contracts. Just ask for them in store.

How do you use the afrihost connection? Do you just connect to their APN?

You register with Afrihost, buy a data product and then have them provision your SIM card. Once it's done (between 2 and 24 hours iirc) you can connect via their APN

Hi All, has anybody actually had any luck with getting better deals MTN Retentions?

I decided I was sick of paying over inflated prices for a phone on contract, and it's better to own it outright.
So I purchased a phone privately, and put it on the CC (or use your homeloan access bond, and just pay it off much faster)
The interest on the amount you spend is less than the amount you are paying for the phone on contract.
Then I took an MTN retentions deal of R219/month for 15 Gigs/500 Mins per month. That saves me a ton per month, that I can rather use to pay for the phone, and works out much cheaper in the end.
Ask your work if they can't pay for the phone outright (private deal probably not too expensive) and then take a R219 contract.
You'll be getting a ton more voice and data, your commitment to MTN for 2 years will be minimal and you'll own the phone.

Well this would have been handy in 2014

:D

You have a point. :)
Damn, and I'm not usually one for necro-posting. Oh well, the info is still relevant, so maybe someone decides this is a better way forward. I'm very glad to have gotten rid of my R2000+ monthly contract, and down to R219 and owning the phone outright with monthly CC fees much less.

People who agree to another 2-year retention deal should appreciate why people keep voting ANC.
