Hi Guys,

So anyway I call MTN 808 in order to cancel my contract and switch to prepaid. They ask me why? So I tell them that I can now go from paying R 2,30 per minute to paying 79 c per minute. They do not sound at all happy and say that I need to speak with "Cancellations department" and they can't just switch me to prepaid. They then forward me to the Retention department who then try to make me a deal to stay on contract... So anyway apparently they are offering 3 months free subscription for any deal that they are currently offering...

Is this legit? Should I rather just go with prepaid? What are your thoughts on this?

Thanks

They offered me a R3k credit on my account for simply making me wait a couple of weeks for a new phone. 3 months of free subscription isn't a great deal.

Go prepaid.

Go prepaid.

I went into one of their centres the other day and they tried the exact thing of trying to lock me back into a contract. I told them I want prepaid. Thy changed it while I was waiting.

Personally I would do it in person so there is no "we did not get the confirmation letter etc"

I changed from contract to pre-paid, with MTN.

Took 10 mins, had to do it after contract was up though, and lost all my airtime, that I had at that point. Was the best R100 or so I ever spent.

They didn't try to keep as a contract customer, and to think I got my contract when customers could pick their last 4 digits of their cell number.

Three months free on a 24 month contract is effectively a mere 12.5% discount on the subscription fees. Go prepaid!

I went prepaid a little over two months ago. You will be amazed to see how much you can save. The best is the flexibility to change to a different provider at any time should a better deal become available or coverage starts to become an issue.

Depends on if you need a new phone or not. If you do get the contract, if not go prepaid.

Unless you actually decide to upgrade again 3 months before the end of the new contract. Then you can actually score 6 months free. That means you get a device at a decent price so no matter what minutes you get a decent deal on the device.

Sadly it means that you will need to be with them for at least another 4 years.

Prepaid is very flexible because you can change your carrier every 60days if you needed too. You get decent call rates but you need to get your own phone and that is where you might loose any savings you make on calls and data on a prepaid plan.

Agreed. That's why I always look for a good second hand phone.

Agree with the "go prepaid" brigade .. same happened to me a while ago. It took me a couple of months of haggling with the SP to eventually cancel my contract, which had long ago run it's contractual term. This was with Nashua Mobile (has to be the most incompetent SP around  )
I cannot believe they have the audacity to claim to have what they call a "call center"
