MTN SIM in VC datacard: step x step guide required

The code that was entered may be the same for all the Huawei card. It is 44646477
Thanks. I suspect the unlock code might be unique for each card. Maybe based on the IMEI number of your card and the network ID of the network to which you are locked.

@chrisbchrisb:
Can you give this a try and report back please?

My E220 did not request a code when I first set it up.

I schlepped to Vodaworld yesterday to see if they could unlock it. The Vodacare desk had never seen one of these !.

I then tried the data office in the Vodashop and the guy there said that they had never unlocked one of these and he didn't have a code for it. Took my details and said he would give me a call. I took the opportunity to make sure my unit was working by using his Vodacom SIM card with my laptop and sure as nuts it worked.

This is so frustrating since I specifically asked the rep who sold it to me at Nashua if the device was network locked and they said emphatically not. Damn!

Is there a way of forcing the E220 to request the unlock code? or is a specific utility prrogram needed?

Good day,

I'll have to speak to my device manager about this will get back to you

Is MTN Selling E220s yet?

If so, Do they have MTN-specific firmware?

Do you know of anyone with a working E220 using MTN SIM? Perhaps this is the quickest route to a solution.

Could my SIM be unsuitable? It's a year old & I got it with the Novatel 630 last year.

I have downloaded & installed the MTN-specific Dash from Huawei website & still no Joy.

It does work with a Vodacom 3G SIM.

Hi there,

Any news for me yet? I really need to get this resolved one way or the other. I'm beginning to think that I should try and return the unit and get a refund. Then buy one from MTNSP. Although I hate to say that the people at MTNSP in Morningside are abysmally uninformed and quite unhelpful. Their service levels also suck. My experiences there have been consistently lousy.

I was really interested in the new router (which was advertized on an MTN flyer in the store) but the guys at the desk whom I asked if I could buy one had no clue as to what it was or when it would be in stock despite the fact that it was clearly advertized with contract pricing. I have 2 3G contracts (6 months to go) and 2 voice contracts (11 years now). I just wanted to buy the unit. All I got was blank stares !

What's the deal with this? If I had to treat my customers of 10 years standing in this way I'd be standing on the street corner now holding up a sign about my dog being arested and asking for a couple of bucks.

Sorry to lay this on you but I really don't know how to get past this blockage. Maybe I should go to MTN Head Office and see if I can get a meeting with the guy in charge of Data Services? It seems like MTNSP's big chief is always playing golf (never available or won't see me). And his organisation is being run like a government department. Even Telkom's public outlet's are more efficient and helpful than this bunch of losers.

Or maybe I should migrate all of my contracts to Vodacom. 2 are up for renewal in January.

Could you please PM me with your number I want to give you a buzz and let’s see if we can get down to the bottom of this

So I went back to Nashua Mobile with a view to getting a refund on the E220. After the advanced Helpdesk Consultant had a look at my problem and tried out various SIM Cards (MTN, VC and my MTN 3G SIM). looked up something on his computer and then said that the unit I was given was "Vodacom Specific". They should have given me an MTN one!

He then proceeded to swap my unit out for a brand new one and waddaya know the thing works with my 3G SIM! Happy days.

SMELLS LIKE NETWORK LOCKING TO ME....Hmmm. I must try and get hold of a VC SIM Card and see if the Unit I now have is "MTN specific".

Anyway, anyone reading this beware - if you decide to buy one of these kickass little modems (3.6 Mbps when the signal's good) then make sure that you ask for the appropriate one that is not "Vodacom Specific". Unless you're a VC subscriber that is.

Thanks MTN DD - I am impressed with your responsiveness. Show this to Brian and ask him to call me so I can tell him what a kickass job you're doing. I'll PM you with more details of my experiences at MTNSP;-)

Before anyone gets really excited....the notification area pop up says "connected to MTN at 3.6 Mbps" but the modem is still only running at around 0.8 Mbps. The MTN network has not been secretly upgraded. I was being overly enthusiastic about the E220 working :o

We haven't switched on 3.6 as yet but just to have the device is a plus as it's a USB device which makes life a lot easier
